Metsa Fibre, Ahlstrom-Munksjo and 3M, with the assistance of Earthworm Foundation, continue to collaborate together to source wood responsibly. This year, the partnership’s focus is on Finland’s Kainuu region, where the various parties will study present-day forestry practices and potential future ones in connection with the region’s expansion of the Kemi Mill. The three businesses will expand their operations and keep working together with other stakeholders to seek sustainable wood procurement in light of the findings.

‘Essential to comprehend local perspectives’
Aiming to improve environmental performance and sustainability throughout their operations and supply chains are Metsa Fibre, the largest producer of bleached softwood pulp in the world as well as a significant global manufacturer of sawn timber, Ahlstrom-Munksjo, a significant consumer of wood pulp, and 3M, a major global manufacturer of paper-based products. Bringing together all participants in the supply chain encourages ethical behaviour, from customers to forests. Finland’s forests contain regions that are significant for biodiversity, community well-being, and as a carbon sink and source of income for locals. Therefore, it is essential to comprehend local perspectives and difficulties to maintain sustainable operations in the region. To better understand potential problems and potential growth opportunities related to local forestry practices, Earthworm will interview a variety of stakeholders. Partners will decide with pertinent stakeholders what steps, if any, might be done to achieve a more sustainable balance between various forest values based on the results.

“At Metsa Fibre, sustainability and responsibility are an integral part of everything we do. We have ambitious 2030 sustainability targets that help to pave the path towards a low-carbon society. We see that proactive sustainability collaboration with customers and other stakeholders is beneficial for us and also for the entire value chain. We are highly committed to driving responsibility not just in our own operations but also within the industry.” said Marko Ruottinen, Sustainability Manager at Metsa Fibre. Read more news on Metsa
