Naturskog-appointment

Naturskog Group, a collective of forestry management and biofuel production enterprises united by a clear, ambitious vision. The Group aims to become the definitive leader in sustainable forestry and bioenergy within the region, a challenge that demands both environmental integrity and operational efficiency. Driving this vision is CEO Joakim Thorsaeus, who sees the future of the forest not just in timber yield, but in its potential as a comprehensive, renewable solution for the modern world. The core mandate for any contemporary Swedish forestry company is to manage complex trade-offs. The country’s forestland, particularly in the productive regions like Uppland and Dalarna (Central Sweden), must simultaneously provide raw material for industry, sequester carbon to combat climate change, and maintain rich, functional biodiversity.

Thorsaeus highlights this essential conflict, noting that “We need to find new ways to continue using forests while protecting forest ecosystems.” This statement is not merely a philosophical goal; it’s an actionable strategy in the face of increasing societal demand for greener practices. The traditional model of intensive, even-aged management is giving way to more nuanced, integrated approaches. For Naturskog, achieving sustainability means leveraging certified forest products and ensuring every step of the value chain minimizes ecological impact. This includes rigorous planning to set aside voluntary conservation areas and implementing forest management systems that mimic natural disturbance regimes to enhance ecological values alongside economic output.

The Power of digitalisation and automation

A major element in translating sustainable intent into measurable results is the adoption of advanced technology. Thorsaeus emphasises that digitalisation and automation are “important tools to make forestry more efficient and sustainable.” In a high-cost environment like Sweden, efficiency is a prerequisite for sustainability; wasteful logistics or imprecise harvesting directly undermine both economic and ecological goals.

Digital tools enable a level of precision previously unattainable. This includes high-resolution mapping of forest stands, sophisticated route optimisation to reduce transport distances and fuel consumption, and automated harvesting machinery guided by GPS coordinates. These technologies allow Naturskog to meticulously adhere to forest plans, targeting specific trees for felling while leaving conservation patches untouched, thus enhancing biodiversity connectivity across the landscape.

Furthermore, digitalisation extends into supply chain transparency. Tracking raw materials from the forest floor to the final product allows for credible certified wooden product sales and verifies the origins of bioenergy feedstock. This transparency is key to building trust with forest owners, partners, and—crucially—national and international decision-makers. As Thorsaeus points out, “We need to increase knowledge and awareness of the importance of Swedish forests among decision-makers, both nationally and internationally,” and data-driven proof of sustainability is the most powerful argument.

The second critical pillar of the Naturskog Group’s operation is its robust biofuel production. The Group sees this segment as having “a huge potential to replace fossil fuels and contribute to the climate transition.” Sweden is already a global leader in bioenergy, with a significant portion of its total energy production derived from forest biomass. Naturskog actively participates in this shift by utilizing co-products and residues from its forestry operations.

Their biofuel efforts focus on transforming what was once waste—such as logging residues, stumps, and industrial co-products like pine oil from pulp mills—into high-value fossil fuel substitutes. Efficient comminution (processing) and logistics for forest fuel are vital components of this. By strategically managing the supply chain, from the forest to the heating plants and refineries, Naturskog helps to maximize the renewable energy output of every hectare of managed forestland.

This dual focus on forestry and bioenergy creates a powerful, circular economy model. The forestry operation provides a constantly replenishing, certified source of raw material, while the biofuel division ensures maximum resource utilisation, driving Sweden’s goal for a fossil-free society. This synergistic approach is a key competitive differentiator, particularly in the Central Sweden market, where demand for both premium wood products and renewable energy remains high.

Looking ahead, Naturskog has established a clear, aggressive roadmap for regional dominance and industry impact. Thorsaeus lays out the Group’s definitive objective: “In five years, we will be a leading player in sustainable forestry in central Sweden.”

The strategy for achieving this leadership involves two key components. First, organic growth will be achieved by continuously improving operational efficiencies and expanding services to forest owners across the Uppland and Dalarna regions. Second, the Group is committed to strategic acquisitions, integrating compatible, well-managed businesses to consolidate a significant market share and scale its innovative methods. This approach is supported by the Group’s partnership with investors like Antilop Group, which provides the long-term capital and operational support necessary for strategic consolidation within a traditionally conservative market.

Ultimately, Naturskog seeks to be recognised not just for its size, but for its core values. They aim to be “known for our efficient biofuel production and our strong commitment to sustainability.” By placing ecological responsibility and innovative technology at the heart of their business model, the Naturskog Group is positioning itself as a crucial architect of Central Sweden’s green future, ensuring that the forest remains a vital, resilient resource for generations to come.
