The London Design Festival 2025, set to take place from 13-21 September 2025, marks the 23rd edition of one of the world’s most prestigious design events. The festival will explore the transformative power of design, addressing critical global challenges and presenting the best of contemporary design from emerging and established talents.
This year, the festival builds on London’s reputation as the global design capital while focusing on sustainable solutions, urban innovation, and the adaptive reuse of architectural heritage. Mayor of London will serve as the Principal Supporter, underlining the city’s commitment to design excellence and innovation.
The festival will highlight several key themes, including sustainability, future cities, and global collaboration. The event will take place across various landmark venues, including the V&A, Design Museum, and Space House, offering a diverse programme of exhibitions, installations, talks, and interactive showcases. It will also explore cutting-edge digital design, adaptive reuse of buildings, and the cross-generational collaborations between designers and creators from various disciplines.
The festival’s partnership with the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) continues to be a cornerstone of the event. The V&A’s curated exhibitions will explore design’s response to pressing global challenges, such as natural resource extraction and the protection of cultural heritage. Artists like Alicja Patanowska, Jakkai Siributr, and Ryunosuke Okazaki will feature, with works highlighting resilience and restoration. Roo Dhissou, the V&A Emerging Designer Commission recipient, will also present his thought-provoking installations during the festival.
The Design Museum, another long-standing partner, will showcase major exhibitions including “Blitz: The Club that Shaped the 80s”, which celebrates the creative explosion of London in the 1980s. “More Than Human”, a symposium and exhibition, will discuss how design can push the boundaries of human-focused thinking to benefit the planet. Additionally, the PLATFORM display will focus on the work of Bethan Laura Wood, with a workshop to engage visitors directly.
One of the major highlights of the 2025 festival is the What Nelson Sees installation by Paul Cocksedge at Trafalgar Square, offering visitors an opportunity to see London through the lens of Admiral Nelson. This unique sculpture will combine intersecting tubes to form telescopic viewing portals, allowing people to experience the city from Nelson’s iconic vantage point. The installation takes visitors on a journey through time, from the city’s contemporary skyline to visions of its future.
Another monumental installation, Beacon by Lee Broom, will be positioned along the riverside, taking inspiration from London’s architecture and legacy. Beacon is a monumental sculptural lighting piece made with upcycled glass fragments, reinterpreting classic street lamps as a vast chandelier-like structure. The installation, supported by Brokis and Materials Assemble, will be both a design piece and a public experience, demonstrating sustainable design practices while creating a visually stunning landmark.
The Design Districts will feature ten distinct zones across London, each representing a unique community. Visitors can explore districts like Brompton, Mayfair, Shoreditch, and Chelsea, each showcasing local creativity and design events within walking distance of each other. These districts serve as key points for discovering new trends, meeting designers, and participating in workshops.
The festival will also host Material Matters, a fair dedicated to exploring the role of materials in design. Located at Space House, this fair will bring together innovators to showcase sustainable, experimental, and market-ready materials, featuring brands such as 3M, Filie Material, and MycoWorks.
Design London Shoreditch, running from 16-18 September 2025, will be a bold addition to the festival, featuring curated exhibitions on workplace design, design culture, and interior innovations. This event will highlight designs ranging from Scandinavian minimalism to bold maximalism, offering a wide spectrum of design experiences.
The Global Design Forum is a pivotal part of the festival, where thought leaders from around the world will convene to discuss the most pressing design challenges. Topics will include sustainability, inclusivity, and accessibility in design, as well as how creative practices can respond to global crises. The forum will continue to explore how design can be more impactful and serve as a catalyst for positive change in society.
The London Design Medals 2025 will be awarded to influential figures and emerging talents in the design community. These awards recognize the contributions of both established designers and rising stars in shaping the future of London’s design landscape. The medals will be presented in partnership with Fortnum & Mason, celebrating those who have driven innovation and excellence in the industry.
The London Design Festival 2025 promises to be a dynamic showcase of design, blending creativity, sustainability, and innovation across diverse exhibitions, installations, and discussions. As one of the world’s leading design events, it will further cement London’s position at the forefront of the global design community. The festival continues to be a platform for both established and emerging designers to collaborate and engage with a wider audience, helping to shape the future of design.
