LIGNA FutureSquare

The woodworking industry is experiencing a wave of innovation driven by start-ups, as the world’s leading trade fair for woodworking and wood processing, LIGNA, prepares for its second edition of LIGNA.FutureSquare. Running from May 26-30, 2025, at Deutsche Messe in Hannover, Germany, the Startup Area will showcase a diverse range of young companies from across Europe, offering cutting-edge solutions for sustainable production, digitalization, and artificial intelligence within the woodworking sector.

Despite challenges such as a traditionally risk-averse culture and limited funding options in Germany, start-ups are gaining momentum, spurred on by initiatives from universities, funding programs, and start-up hubs. As industries become more reliant on technology, these start-ups are focusing on solutions that enhance connectivity, optimize production processes, and promote a circular economy.

At LIGNA 2025, 14 innovative start-ups will present their products and services designed to advance the woodworking industry. These companies, hailing from Germany, Austria, Poland, and the Netherlands, will unveil solutions ranging from timber construction innovations to CO₂ emissions measurement tools. The diverse solutions aim to improve resource efficiency, enhance sustainability, and optimize processes within the wood processing sector.

Stephanie Wagner, Project Manager at Deutsche Messe AG, highlighted that the Startup Area offers a unique platform for young companies to engage directly with industry leaders and established companies, creating valuable networking opportunities. This year’s edition sees a 100% increase in participation compared to 2023, underscoring the growing importance of start-ups in shaping the future of woodworking.

The VDMA Woodworking Machinery Association, in partnership with the VDMA Startup-Machine, is dedicated to facilitating collaboration between start-ups and established companies. Ger Gerdes, Senior Project Manager at VDMA, emphasized that these new players bring fresh energy and innovation to the table, crucial for driving the next phase of growth in woodworking technology.

Participating start-ups like Artesa, COISS, NextCNC, and Voodin.Blades will present their groundbreaking work on LIGNA’s main stage, offering insights into the industry’s future direction. With sustainability and digitalization at the forefront, LIGNA 2025’s FutureSquare promises to be a hub for transformative ideas that will shape the woodworking industry for years to come.

The LIGNA Startup Area offers a unique opportunity for industry professionals to witness firsthand the innovative products and solutions that are poised to redefine woodworking practices in the 21st century.
