LIGNA.Builds will demonstrate the future of timber construction at LIGNA.27 by transforming a full-scale residential building project into a live exhibition experience. From May 10 to 14 in Hanover, Germany, visitors will watch a modern wood-frame building take shape step by step, showcasing how digital planning, industrial prefabrication and skilled craftsmanship are shaping the next generation of sustainable construction.

The project will be constructed on the open-air site of the world’s leading trade fair for the woodworking and wood processing industry. Developed in partnership with holzbau.tech from Rosenheim, LIGNA.Builds will demonstrate the complete journey from planning and engineering to manufacturing and final assembly.

Unlike a traditional exhibition structure, the building created during LIGNA.27 will become a fully functional residential home. After the trade fair, it will be dismantled, transported to its permanent location and rebuilt on the homeowner’s property.

Real Building Project Brings Timber Innovation Directly to Visitors

Located near the expo roof, the LIGNA.Builds construction site will provide visitors with a unique opportunity to observe modern timber construction in action. The project will progress from the foundation slab through to the topping-out ceremony, allowing industry professionals to experience every stage of the building process.

The idea behind LIGNA.Builds was developed during the planning stages for LIGNA.27, with the goal of creating a practical and visible connection between the woodworking sector and the rapidly evolving construction industry.

Stephanie Wagner, Head of LIGNA at Deutsche Messe AG, explained the vision behind the project: “The idea of building a house during LIGNA emerged early in the planning process for LIGNA.27.”

She added that the concept developed from an ambitious idea into a clear vision focused on bringing together the expertise of multiple technology and material partners while creating a lasting connection between the trade fair and the industry it represents.

Digital Planning and Craftsmanship Drive Modern Timber Construction

Timber construction is becoming one of the most important areas of development within the global building sector. Faster construction timelines, resource-efficient materials and advanced prefabrication methods are driving demand for modern wood-based building solutions.

LIGNA.Builds will highlight how digital processes are transforming timber construction. Building information modelling, CNC manufacturing, automated production systems and industrial prefabrication are enabling greater accuracy, efficiency and productivity.

The project will demonstrate how technology and traditional expertise work together. While advanced machinery supports production and preparation, skilled professionals remain essential for assembly and construction quality.

LIGNA.Builds Shows Complete Value Chain From Timber to Building

One of the main objectives of LIGNA.Builds is to showcase the entire value chain of modern timber construction. Visitors will see how raw timber materials are transformed into a completed structure through a coordinated process involving planning, engineering, production and assembly.

The project will involve LIGNA exhibitors providing materials, tools and components required for construction. Some individual elements will also be manufactured using machines displayed within the exhibition halls.

For safety and logistical reasons, larger components will be transported to the construction site overnight. Where possible, suitable elements will be moved during daytime exhibition hours, allowing visitors to experience the connection between manufacturing and construction in real time.

Stephanie Wagner highlighted the importance of this integrated approach, stating: “With LIGNA.Builds, we are making visible just how closely interconnected the entire process chain of modern timber construction really is.”

The construction activity will continue throughout the exhibition, with guided tours, live demonstrations and expert discussions planned for visitors. The topping-out ceremony is expected to become one of the major highlights of LIGNA.27.

Sustainable Building Approach Supports Future of Timber Sector

The LIGNA.Builds project reflects the growing importance of sustainable construction methods. Timber offers significant environmental benefits as a renewable material, while modern manufacturing techniques help reduce waste and improve efficiency.

The ability to dismantle and relocate the completed structure further demonstrates the flexibility and sustainability potential of timber construction.

According to holzbau.tech, the project represents a complete cycle of delivery, from planning and production to transportation and reconstruction. This approach aligns with the company’s focus on sustainable and efficient construction solutions.

LIGNA.Builds Village and TruckStop Expand Industry Networking

Alongside the live construction site, LIGNA will introduce additional formats designed to support professional exchange across the timber construction sector.

The LIGNA.Builds Village will provide exhibitors with dedicated wooden pavilions where technology providers and service companies can present products, solutions and services connected with modern timber construction.

The village concept will encourage interaction between construction professionals, architects, planners, investors and industry specialists.

LIGNA.TruckStop will also return after its first appearance in 2025. The format focuses on skilled trades and will showcase power tools, fastening technology, hardware and wood-based materials directly from exhibition vehicles.

Through live demonstrations and technical presentations, LIGNA.TruckStop will provide practical insights for carpenters, joiners and timber construction professionals.

LIGNA.Builds Positions Timber Construction at Centre of Industry Transformation

LIGNA.Builds will create a direct link between woodworking technology and real construction applications. By combining machinery, materials, digital solutions and craftsmanship, the project will demonstrate how the woodworking industry is contributing to the future of sustainable building.

The initiative strengthens LIGNA’s role as a global platform for innovation across woodworking and wood processing. It shows how developments in manufacturing technology are supporting the expansion of modern timber construction worldwide.

With LIGNA.Builds, LIGNA.27 will bring timber construction future to life through a real residential building project, demonstrating how wood-frame construction, digital manufacturing, prefabricated timber buildings and skilled craftsmanship are transforming the woodworking industry.
