Lifting made simple with Schmalz: experience at LogiMAT 2020

 Tuesday, December 24, 2019

This year’s LogiMAT scheduled from March 10 to 12, 2020 is all about “Visions – Innovations – Solutions,” and Schmalz will be there: along with its application-oriented handling systems, the vacuum specialist will be providing fresh impetus in the digitization of lifting technology. Solutions for classic manual and automatic goods logistics and systems for the digital factory await visitors to the trade show in hall 7, booth C05.

Nowadays, logistics is about much more than transporting boxes from A to B. It may be smart or green, and must be dynamic and transparent to seamlessly document goods tracking. The J. Schmalz GmbH product range has the right answer to practically every manual and automated lifting task. The focus of LogiMAT this year is on handling technology. That includes clever concepts for low ceilings: thanks to its drag chain V-Chain, the JumboFlex gains valuable centimeters below the jib on flat jib systems. While loading or unloading pallets, for instance, the high-stack and low-stack versions of the vacuum tube lifter allow for much more ergonomic work processes.

Digital Support

Schmalz will be demonstrating the benefits of digital technology for manual handling with its collaborative rope balancer SRBC. Sensors record movement impulses that are directly supported by motors. Users can define work areas with predefined limits that the SRBC automatically maintains. Furthermore, the rope balancer detects which grippers are connected and follows their approved movement patterns. It detects where and whether objects can be placed down and records important process parameters – a fundamental requirement for functions such as predictive maintenance. It means the smart lifter is ready for deployment in the digital factory.

In addition to manual handling, Schmalz will be showing its expertise in vacuum automation with a variety of end-of-arm tools, with a focus on systems for palletizing and de-palletizing. The layer gripper SPZ rapidly and reliably handles even partly covered surfaces of cans, hollow jars or cardboard box and film packaging. The pneumatic gripping concept can also be assisted with mechanical clamping. The design of the Schmalz system ensures that there is no need for modification when changing products.

Another solution for gripping different workpieces is the area gripper FXP. At LogiMAT, it will be showcased with SPB2-40-type suction cups, which are ideal for handling cardboard boxes and foil-wrapped goods. The area gripping system with integrated vacuum generator is low-weight, which makes it suitable for use on small robots. All these features make the FXP a flexible solution for the automated palletizing, de-palletizing, commissioning and sorting of a wide range of different objects.

Innovation for Cobots

Another highlight at the trade show booth will be the lightweight gripper SLG for cobots. Users can configure it online based on their handling task. The program assists the user through every single step and sends the finished design data directly to the 3D printing service.Additive manufacturing is the key to cost-efficient and rapid single component production. In the end, the user receives a weight-optimized gripper, specially developed for use on collaborative robots, that paves the way for the automation of individual handling tasks.
