Kronospan expands Romanian footprint with the acquisition of Sebeș sawmill

Underscoring the resilience and strategic importance of Romania’s timber processing sector, Kronospan, a world leader in wood-based panels and value-added wood products, has proficeiently completed its acquisition of the Sebeș sawmill from ZG Timber, formerly part of the Ziegler Group.

The finalisation of this deal, following all necessary regulatory approvals, marks a pivotal moment for both Kronospan and the local economy in Alba County, Romania. The transaction ensures the seamless continuity of operations at the Sebeș facility, immediately preserving employment for the more than 500 people currently working at the site. Furthermore, it sustains a wide, critical network of indirect jobs across local suppliers, contractors, logistics partners, and service providers whose activities are fundamentally dependent on the sawmill’s output.

The integration of the Sebeș sawmill into Kronospan’s existing Romanian operations reinforces the company’s long-term strategic commitment to the country. Since establishing a presence in Romania in 1998, Kronospan has invested over 600 million Euros, demonstrating profound confidence in Romania’s industrial capabilities, even amidst challenging global economic environments.

This acquisition consolidates Kronospan’s footprint, which already includes two major production plants: one in Brașov (specializing in Oriented Strand Board, or OSB), and another large facility in Sebeș (producing Particleboard, or PB, Medium-Density Fibreboard, or MDF, and melamine boards). The addition of the sawmill strengthens this infrastructure and positions Romania as an increasingly vital hub in the global wood-processing landscape. The company also operates a logistics center in the Port of Constanța and maintains several wood collection and recycling centres across the country, further securing its supply chain.

The primary strategic driver behind this acquisition is vertical integration and product diversification. As part of its broader growth strategy, Kronospan will immediately integrate sawn timber—the core output of the Sebeș facility—into its product portfolio.

This new product line serves two critical functions:

1. Product expansion: It allows Kronospan to offer whole-log products (sawn timber) alongside its engineered wood products, providing a comprehensive solution suite to its global customer base. The addition of timber will directly complement the company’s existing high-value products, which are exported to over 75 countries worldwide, including across Asia, the Middle East, and the Americas.
2. Raw material security: Crucially, integrating the sawmill provides Kronospan with improved control over the supply of quality wood materials. The sawmill process generates co-products like wood chips, sawdust, and slabs that are essential raw material inputs for the company’s panel production (PB, MDF, and OSB) at its nearby facilities. This closed-loop system enhances supply chain security, improves material efficiency, and contributes to a more sustainable, resource-efficient operation.

The wood-based panels industry is at the forefront of the circular bioeconomy, leveraging wood residues and low-grade logs to create value-added engineered products like PB and MDF. These panels are key components in the global furniture and construction industries, offering sustainable alternatives to solid wood and fossil-intensive materials.

The integration of the sawmill completes a powerful chain of wood utilization for Kronospan:

• Sawn timber: High-quality logs are processed into lumber for structural applications, construction, and specialized products.
• Co-products/residues: The chips and sawdust generated during the sawing process become the primary feedstock for the adjacent wood-based panel plants in Sebeș and Brașov.
• Final products: PB, MDF, and OSB are manufactured into finished panels, including value-added melamine boards, which are integral to the European furniture market.

This symbiotic relationship between the sawmill and the panel plants minimizes waste and maximises the value extracted from every log harvested, aligning with the growing global emphasis on sustainable manufacturing and reducing the industry’s environmental footprint.

Kronospan’s acquisition and its continued investment—which have previously included the inauguration of modernised, low-emission wood lamination lines at the Sebeș plant—solidify the position of “Romanian Made” wood products on the international stage.

The wood industry in Romania is poised for continued growth, with forecasts indicating a steady increase in wood product sales and panel production. By combining the country’s strong forestry resources with Kronospan’s advanced manufacturing technology and global distribution network, the partnership is set to capitalise on the increasing worldwide demand for cost-effective, sustainable wood products in construction, flooring, and furniture.

The successful integration of the ZG Timber sawmill is more than just a business transaction; it is a clear demonstration of Kronospan’s enduring strategy to drive vertical integration and efficiency within the European wood-processing sector, ensuring job stability, securing vital supply chains, and reinforcing Romania’s role as a key player in the global timber economy.
