Koskisen Corporation’s Mäntsäläntie and Tehdastie plant areas will be connected by a district heating pipe, which will be built by Loimua Oy, the heat production operator for Koskisen’s production plants in Järvelä. Sawmill production under the Sawn Timber Industry segment is located on Mäntsäläntie, while the Panel Industry segment’s birch plywood and chipboard production is located on Tehdastie.
A district heating connection pipe of approximately four kilometres in length will be constructed between Koskisen Corporation’s Mäntsäläntie and Tehdastie plant areas. The project will also include the necessary connections and modifications to the existing heat and power plants. Construction, carried out by Loimua Oy, will begin in summer 2025, with the pipeline expected to be operational by early spring 2026. The investment in the district heating connection will be fully funded by Loimua, Koskisen’s heat production partner in Järvelä.
The construction of the district heating connection pipe will address the increased energy demand of Koskisen’s Sawn Timber Industry segment. It will also improve heat supply reliability by ensuring sufficient energy availability during potential disruptions. The rise in heat energy consumption stems from the expanded capacity of the new sawmill. This enhanced energy infrastructure will not only support current operations but also enable future growth in sawmill production beyond the current annual volume of 400,000 m³.
“Connecting the district heating networks will enable synergies in heat production at both plant areas, reduce the need for the construction of reserve power based on fossil fuels and increase renewable electricity production due to the increased stability of the volume of heat production. Connecting the district heating networks of the Tehdastie and Mäntsäläntie plant areas will also allow us to fully utilise unused capacity, which naturally improves our energy efficiency,” says Markku Lähteenmäki, Director of Environment, Quality and Safety at Koskisen Corporation.
The advantages of the district heating connection pipe that will connect the plant areas:
- Energy savings of approximately 6,000 MWh per year
- The opportunity to increase biofuel-powered renewable electricity production by 7,000 MWh per year
- The opportunity to optimise the use and maintenance of biofuel-powered boilers
- The opportunity to utilise the electric boilers at the plant areas as shared reserve power for balancing peaks in the demand for heat
