In its field, Koskisen‘s chipboard factory in Järvelä is somewhat of a unicorn. Being the sole chipboard manufacturer in Finland, it can accommodate a variety of furniture board and chipboard requirements in addition to custom batches and unique solutions for customers.
Sami Santala, who works as a technology manager at Koskinen, describes the chipboard factory as agile. “We can maintain a unique product palette and tailor panels to customers according to their wishes,” affirms Santala. She observes that the factory produces trial batches of special panels for customers at a low threshold. “Standard products and large batch sizes are, of course, cost-effective, and that is why Central European chipboard factories are focused on them. But we are happy to challenge ourselves and develop the product together with the customer.”
The product line of the chipboard mill is wide-ranging. From three millimeters to fifty millimeters, panels of varying thicknesses can be manufactured with ease. It is also possible to adjust the chipboard’s density to meet the needs of the client. In addition to standard products, Koskipro products can be made by optimising the board’s technical properties beyond the norms based on the needs of the customer, according to Sami Santala. “We can also combine plywood production if necessary. In practice, we have all plywood coatings available. That is also unique, that both solutions can be obtained under one roof”, Santala states.
Customers of Koskisen benefit from small batch production and development in collaboration with the client. Chipboard does not need to be kept on the customer’s end when they are not required to order it in bulk. Product Manager Heidi Pesonen informs us that many clients can find replacement chipboard products for a variety of applications in Koskisen’s product portfolio. “We have many customers who deal with us weekly. I dare say that our customer experience is extremely good”, Santala adds.
The raw wood material used to make chipboard is compressed into a board to create a sort of cake. Because of a unique spreading process, Koskisen chipboard has a higher basic density. This guarantees the boards’ good workability. Small batches, a wide variety of products, and rapid product switching are all made possible by the chipboard factory’s one-daylight press process. Heidi Pesonen adds that Koskisen chipboards are likewise of high quality.
