Koskisen launches investment program in plywood production to drive sustainable growth

Koskisen, an international wood processing specialist, has announced a comprehensive investment program aimed at enhancing its plywood production within the Panel Industry business in Järvelä. This strategic initiative is set to run until the end of 2027, aligning with the company’s long-term growth plans. The first phase, with investments valued at approximately €12 million, is scheduled to be implemented in 2025.

“In line with our strategy, we are creating sustainable growth, and the focus of investments is now strongly shifting to the Panel Industry side. In recent years, we have invested heavily in the Sawmill Industry: the total value of investments in the new sawmill and related operations, such as the log field to be commissioned at the beginning of 2025, is approximately €75 million,” said Jukka Pahta, CEO of Koskisen.

The company foresees a stable and strengthening demand for its wood products, driven by the global green transition, urbanisation, and advancements in trade and transport. Koskisen emphasises that its long-term carbon-sequestering wood products play a pivotal role in promoting a sustainable circular bioeconomy.

The investment program aims to boost volume growth, streamline production processes, and enhance internal logistics. Key elements include the automation of production stages, designed to modernise and improve the productivity, quality, and yield of plywood manufacturing. As part of the program, the company plans to increase its plywood production capacity from 65,000 m³ to 85,000 m³, requiring significant upgrades to its machinery.

“The key objective of the investment programme is to improve the productivity, quality and yield of plywood production. As a result of the programme, the plywood production capacity will increase from the current 65,000 m³ to 85,000 m³. This requires significant development and investment in the machinery base,” said Tom-Peter Helenius, Director of Panel Industry.

The first phase of the program will focus on developing veneer production processes. Koskisen’s plywood mill specialises in tailor-made, high-quality birch plywood products used in light and heavy transport vehicles, die-cutting tools, interior decoration, and furniture. Major customer segments include the automotive, transportation, construction, and furniture industries.

“The existing production line has been built in stages and currently imposes restrictions on production development and volume growth. It is great that with the investment program now being launched, we have the opportunity to look at things with fresh eyes by modernizing the various stages of production and their interrelation,” added Helenius.

Koskisen remains committed to sustainability, leveraging its expertise to maximise the use of wood raw materials, including by-products like sawdust. In 2023, the company reported revenues of €271 million.
