Koskisen is introducing Zero ThinPly, a new thin plywood made entirely from bio-based materials—free from added formaldehyde, phenolic compounds, and urea. This fossil-free innovation meets growing customer demand for fully sustainable and environmentally friendly material alternatives.

“We are thrilled to expand the Zero product family with a new product, as our customers are increasingly interested in the product safety of the materials they use, and in reducing their environmental and climate impacts,” says Tom-Peter Helenius, Director, Panel Industry business at Koskisen.

The bio-bonded thin plywood is intended for indoor use, for example in laser-cut design products such as lamps, jewelry, and various interior decoration items, where Koskisen’s traditional thin plywood is already widely used. It is particularly well-suited for indoor air-critical applications, where strict formaldehyde emission limits apply. The new non-toxic, bio-based adhesive used in Zero ThinPly delivers strength performance nearly identical to traditional adhesives, even under dry conditions. Developed in collaboration with bio-based materials expert Plantics, the adhesive ensures Zero ThinPly meets high durability standards without compromising sustainability.

Previously, the Zero product family introduced the Zero Furniture Board, the world’s first particleboard made entirely from bio-based materials. The wood raw material for the Zero Furniture Board comes from Koskisen’s own production side streams, and lignin, a wood-derived binder, is used as its adhesive.

The main source of emissions in plywood and chipboard products is the production of fossil-based adhesives. Koskisen’s sustainability program commits to reducing emissions from its own operations and value chain. The increased use of bio-based binders in panel products advances the achievement of the goal.
