KFC gets a taste of Accoya Wood

 Thursday, June 23, 2016

accoyaKFC, one of the world’s best known fast-food outlets, has successfully incorporated the revolutionary modified wood Accoya® into its first ever two-storey outlet.  In a drive for greater sustainability and a higher quality build and finish for its global restaurant brand, Accoya was used to clad the first-of-its-kind new build KFC restaurant and drive-through in Manchester, United Kingdom.

Born out of over 90 years of research and development, Accoya offers outstanding durability. Customers are guaranteed to enjoy their naturally beautiful Accoya for a minimum of 50 years. Made from FSC® certified wood from legal, manageable and sustainable forests, Accoya is manufactured by Accsys using a modification process which creates one of the most advanced modified wood products on the market today.

Built by Trojan Construction, with Accoya supplied by Mon Timber Limited, the two-storey KFC restaurant on Bury New Road, Prestwich, features extensive Accoya cladding which is used over a 20mm cavity. Accoya was used for large areas of the external elevations and soffits, as well as for the double height curtain walling pictured on the front elevations. Accoya was also used for the impressive sun stopping brise soleil canopy throughout the drive-through.

To achieve the natural aesthetic, the pre-finished Accoya profiles were given one coat of Precision Natural Plus-Ctec base coat, followed by three coats of Precision Sansin translucent top coat. Additionally, Accoya is 75% less likely to shrink and swell in variable weather conditions, allowing it to retain its structural integrity compared to its competitors – ideal for a predominantly external project such as this.

Josh Worthy from specialist timber supplier, Mon Timber explained: “Accoya was the perfect choice for KFC’s first two-storey new build, being aesthetically pleasing from a design perspective yet also offering exceptional dimensional stability. The timber will not cup, bow or twist, which is an all too common complication when using a natural timber product as a cladding solution.”

It is envisaged that Accoya wood will be specified for a number of KFC sites in the UK which are due for refurbishment or for rebuild, particularly drive-through services.

Laura Ladd, head of marketing at Accsys Technologies commented: “Using Accoya for a first-of-its-kind new build for a globally recognised brand like KFC demonstrates Accoya’s potential to make a significant long-term statement about innovation, sustainability and quality.

“Thanks to the acetylation process, Accoya has the strength and durability to meet even the most challenging architectural demands; enabling projects to create outstanding looks but also industry leading performance with unrivalled sustainability, which has resulted in a range of high quality buildings and refurbishments”.
