IMA Schelling develops custom solution for Italian client

 Wednesday, January 29, 2025

The IMA Schelling Group has unveiled an innovative edge processing solution for an Italian client, revolutionizing the automated production of high-quality handle profiles. This advanced system allows for seamless integration of handleless kitchen fronts, catering to the growing demand for modern and minimalist kitchen designs.

Rising Demand for Handleless Fronts

Handleless kitchen fronts have gained immense popularity due to their sleek aesthetics and clean lines. When opting for handle profiles instead of traditional handles, manufacturers must adopt precise production techniques. Until now, two primary methods were used: aluminum profile rails or milled MDF boards, both of which are costly and complex. The new solution by IMA Schelling significantly streamlines this process.

Cutting-Edge Edge Processing Technology

The newly developed system enables fully automated production of both straight and profiled edges. Designed to handle four distinct profiles—J-profiles, C-profiles, angled, and rebate profiles—the machine optimizes efficiency and precision in edge banding.

A major challenge was perfecting the edge banding for J- and C-profiles. Through extensive testing of edging materials and adhesive application techniques, IMA Schelling identified the optimal combination, ensuring superior results.

Innovations in Edging and Adhesive Application

Traditional edge banding methods were inadequate for the intricate J- and C-profiles. To address this, IMA Schelling implemented a hybrid adhesive application process, applying adhesive both to the edging material and, in specific areas, directly onto the workpiece. This innovative approach enhances adhesion while reducing finishing requirements.

Moreover, to accommodate thicker edgings while maintaining malleability, heat guns and mechanical scoring units were incorporated. These features ensure that materials between 0.6mm and 1.0mm can be seamlessly applied at nearly 90-degree angles without compromising durability.

Fully Automated Production for Maximum Efficiency

The tailor-made system is integrated into a Combima format and edge processing machine, enabling batch-size-1 production. It facilitates the automated manufacturing of furniture fronts in five distinct edging shapes, utilizing multiple fine-finishing units, including inside corner rounding, scraping, buffing, and brushing units. The extensive system spans over 40 meters, showcasing its capability to process furniture parts efficiently at an industrial scale.

IMA Schelling’s latest innovation marks a significant leap forward in the woodworking industry, delivering high-precision, automated solutions tailored to the evolving demands of modern furniture production.
