Hasslacher Norica Timber – one of the greatest woodworking mass timber innovators has recently executed a major project – Wood-concrete bridge S37. Together with STRABAG, ASFINAG and the HASSLACHER group implemented such an innovation along the S37 Klagenfurt Expressway. One of the bridge structures to be rehabilitated along this road was designed and executed as a wood-concrete composite bridge.

Let’s have a look what is wood-concrete composite?

Wood-concrete composite combines the positive features of both materials and is used to build superstructures in which the concrete manages the compressive and the wooden parts the tensile loads. In this case, the shear connection was made using rectangular notches and a few screws to protect against lifting.

For shear connection, one could also use screws, glued-in steel elements or glued in hardware with prefabricated concrete elements. In this bridge superstructure, the top concrete slab protects the wood underneath from the weather. Carbon storage capability of wood, beam design and sensors & monitoring

The bridge incorporates a total of 82 m³ of glulam, enabling the sequestration of approximately 70 tons of carbon within its wooden components. The entire wooden superstructure is equipped with an advanced sensor network that continuously tracks and records wood moisture levels and climatic conditions. It is constructed as a composite element, the glulam beam is composed of 15 individual glulam sections, measuring 21 meters in length, 1,000 millimeters in thickness, and approximately 3.9 meters in width.

Details of the project:

  • Location: S 37 Klagenfurter Schnellstraße (highway)
  • Customer: STRABAG Infrastructure & Safety Solutions
  • Design and construction: ASFINAG, WÖRLE SPAROWITZ INGENIEURE Ziviltechniker GmbH
  • Builder: ASFINAG
  • Year of building: 2024
  • Used wooden products: Spruce glulam as a composite material with milled, rectangular bird’s mouth
  • Sites of the HASSLACHER group: HASSLACHER Holzbausysteme GmbH, Hermagor
