Gyproc Ireland aspires to join The Pallet Loop

November 24, 2025
Gyproc Ireland-The Pallet Loop

Gyproc Ireland has announced a landmark partnership with The Pallet LOOP, becoming the first building materials manufacturer on the island to fully commit to the innovative circular pallet reuse scheme. This collaboration, which is further powered by logistics partner CJ Sheeran, introduces a greener, leaner, and smarter model for transporting plaster and plasterboard products across the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, fundamentally redesigning waste out of the supply chain.

The construction industry globally faces immense pressure to improve its sustainability credentials. In Ireland, while national efforts are progressing, the country’s circular material use rate remains a priority area for improvement. Pallets, often treated as single-use packaging, are a major contributor to site waste, with the traditional linear model costing the sector financially and environmentally.

The Pallet LOOP addresses this challenge head-on with its distinctive, highly durable green pallets. Engineered for repeated reuse, these pallets are an alternative to the millions of single-use timber pallets that typically end up in skips, landfill, or being burned.

Beginning in November 2025, Gyproc Ireland, a subsidiary of the global construction materials giant Saint-Gobain, will commence the distribution of its extensive range of plaster and plasterboard products on these circular-economy pallets. This move directly supports Saint-Gobain’s ambitious global commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, building upon the successful adoption of LOOP pallets by sister companies British Gypsum and Isover for their insulation products.

A key feature designed to ensure the success of the reuse model is the financial incentive for responsible behaviour. Construction sites, merchants, and distributors are encouraged to return the empty green LOOP pallets for reuse rather than disposal.

Customers who participate in the scheme and return the reusable pallets will receive a substantial PayBack of €2/£2 to €4/£4 per pallet. This mechanism not only rewards users but also significantly cuts down on the costs and time associated with managing and disposing of waste timber, which can represent a considerable saving for any building project in Dublin, Cork, Galway, or Belfast.

Andy Williamson, Managing Director at The Pallet LOOP, praised the partnership, stating, “Our mission is simple: design waste out of construction logistics. That’s why it’s fantastic to welcome Gyproc as our first manufacturing partner in Ireland. Partnering with Gyproc extends the reach of our reuse model across Ireland and Northern Ireland, making it easier than ever for sites to return pallets and receive meaningful value. With a PayBack of €2/£2 to €4/£4 per green pallet, we’re rewarding responsible behaviours while reducing carbon and cost for the entire sector.”

Efficient collection and reverse logistics are vital for any circular model. The Pallet LOOP has partnered with CJ Sheeran, Ireland’s leading timber pallet and packaging company, to manage the island-wide recovery service.

With over 20 years of experience and a network of 13 depots across the country, CJ Sheeran is uniquely positioned to handle the operational scale required. The company’s established logistics team facilitates over 14,000 collections annually, ensuring the recovered green pallets are inspected, repaired, and reissued back into the Gyproc supply chain, thereby ensuring the loop is effectively closed.

Kieran Holohan, Managing Director, Gyproc Ireland, emphasised the strategic importance of the collaboration. “At Gyproc, sustainability is at the heart of everything we do. Our partnership with The Pallet LOOP and CJ Sheeran marks a major milestone in our journey toward a circular economy. By rethinking how we manage and reuse pallets, we’re not only reducing waste and carbon emissions, but also setting a new standard for responsible logistics in the construction sector,” said Mr. Holohan. Gyproc’s commitment to sustainability is already evident through other investments, including the installation of a significant 2.5 MW solar farm at its Kingscourt facility in County Cavan.

The process for construction companies and merchants to participate is straightforward and designed for simplicity:

  • Register with the Pallet LOOP’s logistics partner, CJ Sheeran.
  • Stack and store the empty, distinctive green LOOP pallets safely on-site.
  • Contact CJ Sheeran to arrange for a collection.
  • Receive a PayBack of up to €4 / £4 per reusable green pallet returned.

Furthermore, in a move to maximise resource efficiency, the service also offers collection for standard white pallets, which are taken for refurbishment and remarketing, helping sites achieve up to a 10% reduction in their total waste volume. A handling charge of €3/£3 per white pallet applies for this collection service.

This collaboration between Gyproc Ireland, The Pallet LOOP, and CJ Sheeran is more than a logistical upgrade; it is a blueprint for how the Irish building materials industry can successfully transition to a circular economy, delivering tangible environmental and financial benefits across the entire construction supply chain.
