Sveaskog places a high priority on lowering emissions from the transportation of timber. The utilisation of HCT cars is one of the development projects the company is working on in the area. In northern Sweden, the tests are now being conducted on 90-ton trucks.

Emissions per ton transported are decreased by equipping more axles with greater capacity to move lumber. On the other hand, it may result in fewer cars on the road, which would improve traffic safety. A significant portion of the carbon dioxide emissions from the timber industry are attributable to transportation. The utilisation of 90-ton HCT (High Capacity Transport) vehicles is one of the development initiatives that Sveaskog is working on, and it is currently entering a new phase. “In the transition towards more sustainable transport, we must work on a broad front with several different solutions to reduce the fossil footprint. The development of longer and heavier vehicles is an important piece of the puzzle in parallel with investments in new fuels,” comments Anders Järlesjö, Technical Director at Sveaskog.

Volvo Trucks and Sveaskog are working together on the 90-ton trucks. The work is being done as part of the DHEELS project (Demonstration of Highly Energy-Efficient Logistics Systems), in which 26 parties work together to support the creation and deployment of energy-efficient logistics solutions using fossil fuel-free, high-capacity truck trains. The vehicle type can produce both more and bigger values if utilised on a wider scale on several road sections, although it has only been tested at terminals thus far under ideal conditions.

When it comes to heavy transportation, Sveaskog can combine environmental concerns and efficiency with innovative solutions to reduce the number of vehicles on the road and improve road safety. To properly assess the utilisation, Sveaskog is now extending the experiments using 90-ton trucks across a larger geographic area, according to Henrik Engman, customer manager at Sveaskog.

Until July 2028, the trucks will transport raw materials between the forest and Sveaskog’s clients in southern Norrbotten and northern Västerbotten. One of the haulage companies that will test drive the 90-ton HCT trucks is Eklunds Åkeri. “It’s fun to be involved when things happen. Of course, it takes time and energy, but both I, as CEO, and the drivers who participate appreciate collaborating with Sveaskog and contributing to the development of new technology,” notes Jonas Eklund, CEO of Eklunds Åkeri.

Sveaskog, in a nutshell

Owned by the Swedish government, Sveaskog is the country’s largest forest. Sveaskog’s goal is to manage its forests and land responsibly and sustainably so that it can generate wealth while helping Sweden meet its national climate and environmental goals as well as the global objectives outlined in Agenda 2030. Its 800+ staff members strive daily to maintain sustainable forests for the future by balancing the ecological, economic, and social benefits of land and forests.
