Woodworking Network

The Furniture Makers’ Company and the Sylva Foundation are set to start a new national initiative, named The Woodworking Teachers Network, in the UK, providing a huge boost to the woodworking education industry. A national community that links, empowers, and supports educators engaged in teaching woodworking and furniture-making is what the program seeks to establish. The results of an extensive survey carried out in the spring of 2025, which demonstrated the pressing need for stronger assistance for woodworking instructors throughout Great Britain, are the direct cause of this innovative new endeavour.

The survey, which gathered insights from 55 teachers, tutors, and technicians across the UK, revealed both the value and challenges of woodworking education. The survey’s findings were supplemented by discussions at the Crafting Connections seminar held earlier in 2025. The research highlighted the challenges faced by woodworking educators, many of whom have transitioned from successful careers in industry to teaching, yet find themselves navigating a field that is underfunded and lacks adequate professional development opportunities.

A significant 73% of the surveyed educators voiced strong support for the creation of a national network to facilitate peer support, offer professional development, and address the numerous barriers they face. Common challenges include isolation, outdated curricula, lack of tailored training, and underfunding. Educators expressed a shared desire for stronger peer connections, more modern training opportunities, and an increased recognition of the importance of woodworking education in today’s society.

Joseph Bray of the Sylva Foundation noted, “This is about more than just sharing teaching resources – it’s about building a vibrant, supportive community of educators who are passionate about craftsmanship and committed to passing on their knowledge. Through this network, we aim to nurture excellence in teaching, promote innovation, and ensure that woodworking education continues to thrive into the future.”

The Woodworking Teachers Network is designed to be an inclusive, dynamic platform for educators from all backgrounds, including those in secondary schools, further education colleges, universities, independent training centres, and those working as freelance instructors. The network will provide educators with the following key features:

Peer mentoring and collaboration: Experienced educators will be able to mentor early-career teachers, creating a supportive environment for knowledge-sharing across various institutions.

Specialised continuous professional development (CPD): The network will offer CPD opportunities tailored to the unique needs of woodworking educators. These opportunities will cover vital topics such as machine safety, CAD/CAM technologies, digital drawing, neurodiversity, sustainability in woodworking, and pedagogy for teaching practical craftsmanship.

Online hub for resources: Educators will have access to a digital platform where they can share teaching materials, safety protocols, project templates, industry case studies, and more. This will serve as an essential resource for teaching professionals across the country.

In-person and online gatherings: The network will facilitate regular meetings, both virtual and physical, to encourage professional dialogue, shared learning, and connections between educators from various regions.

Advocacy and thought leadership: The network will work closely with awarding bodies and policymakers to promote the value of woodworking education and to advocate for necessary changes to improve the sector’s sustainability and recognition within the broader educational framework.

One of the most exciting aspects of this initiative is its recognition of informal and non-traditional educators. The network does not solely focus on those within formal education systems but also values the contributions of independent instructors, charities, and non-traditional teaching settings. This inclusivity ensures that educators from all corners of the woodworking community have a voice and a platform to thrive.

Chris Hyde, the Education and Training Chairman at The Furniture Makers’ Company, expressed the network’s broader mission: “Woodworking education holds the power to transform lives – building confidence, creativity, resilience, and tangible skills. Through this network, we want to give back to the teachers who give so much to their students, often with little support.”

Developing the idea

The idea for the Woodworking Teachers Network was born from discussions at the Crafting Connections seminar held at the Sylva Wood Centre in June 2025. Over 30 educators from across the country attended this event, where they engaged in lively discussions about the shared needs and aspirations of the woodworking education community. Key topics included the importance of updating curricula, improving diversity among student cohorts, forging stronger industry and heritage partnerships, and making CPD more meaningful and accessible for all educators.

The launch of the network will be preceded by an online kick-off meeting in autumn 2025, with a follow-up in-person event scheduled for 2026. In the meantime, the Sylva Foundation and The Furniture Makers’ Company are collaborating on building a digital platform for ongoing collaboration, resource sharing, and support.

Why woodworking education matters

The role of woodworking education goes beyond the teaching of technical skills; it empowers students to develop a wide range of capabilities, including creativity, problem-solving, resilience, and the confidence to pursue a craft that can lead to both personal fulfillment and career opportunities in the woodworking industry. For educators who are passionate about their craft, this new initiative provides the essential tools, networks, and resources to continue nurturing the next generation of skilled furniture makers and woodworkers.

In conclusion, the Woodworking Teachers Network represents a bold step forward in enhancing the teaching of woodworking across the UK. By providing a platform for peer support, professional development, and advocacy, the initiative will empower educators and ensure that woodworking education continues to thrive, benefiting both students and the industry as a whole. Educators and institutions alike are encouraged to join this exciting new network and be part of a movement that aims to shape the future of craftsmanship education.
