i4F, a renowned name in the global flooring industry for providing revolutionary patents and proprietary technologies, has signaled a strategic leap into a new era of innovation with the appointment of Dr. Edith Hermans as its new Chief Technology Officer (CTO). Dr. Hermans, a distinguished European and Dutch patent attorney with over twenty-five years of international experience in R&D and intellectual property (IP) management, immediately joins i4F’s senior management team. This high-profile appointment underscores the company’s commitment to fortifying its technological leadership not just within the flooring sector, but also through an ambitious strategy of cross-industry technology development.
The move is strategically timed to capitalise on current and emerging flooring trends, such as the demand for sustainable materials, effortless installation systems like i4F’s signature drop-lock technologies (3L TripleLock® and Click4U®), and advanced surface finishing. Dr. Hermans is tasked with overseeing the company’s global technology and R&D strategy, driving excellence in research, and significantly contributing to the expansion and robustness of i4F’s innovation portfolio.
Dr. Hermans’s extensive expertise
Dr. Hermans’ professional background brings a unique blend of scientific rigor and commercial acumen to i4F, a combination perfectly suited to transforming innovative concepts into valuable, market-ready products. Her extensive career has spanned complex R&D leadership roles and sophisticated IP management across multiple high-tech industries, including chemicals, pharmaceuticals, fertilisers, and bio-valorisation. This multi-industry experience is key to i4F’s stated goal of managing and leveraging technologies from sectors beyond traditional flooring.
Prior to joining i4F, Dr. Hermans spent over thirteen years with Tessenderlo Group, where she most recently served as VP Innovation, IP & Regulatory Affairs. In this capacity, she was instrumental in managing innovation partnerships, leading complex IP negotiations, and building and transforming the organisation’s global R&D and intellectual property framework. Earlier in her career, she held senior leadership roles, including Group IP Director, and contributed to the strategic development of Intellectual Asset Management during her five years at DSM Dyneema.
Her foundational expertise is backed by strong academic credentials, holding a PhD in Chemistry from KU Leuven and a master’s degree with magna cum laude distinction. Coupled with her status as a European and Dutch patent attorney and her completion of multiple executive leadership programs, her profile is that of a visionary leader capable of navigating the complex intersection of science, law, and business growth.
The flooring industry is currently experiencing a rapid technological evolution, driven by consumer and commercial demand for greater performance, realism, and speed of installation. As CTO, Dr. Hermans is uniquely positioned to accelerate i4F’s role as an industry-wide catalyst.
In her own words, Dr. Hermans expressed her excitement, stating, “Creating business from technology and IP is close to my heart. That’s what made me decide to jump into this new adventure.” This focus on monetising technological assets will be central to her mandate, ensuring i4F’s deep portfolio of patents—which spans technologies for drop-lock installation, digital printing, surface finishing, and board composition—continues to deliver maximum value to its network of global licensees.
i4F CEO, John Rietveldt, emphasised the strategic importance of the appointment: “Edith’s deep expertise and leadership in innovative IP make her a valuable addition to i4F’s management team. Her structured approach to R&D will help us anticipate further strategic growth areas within the flooring industry and beyond, as well as further strengthen i4F’s position as a technology leader.” He highlighted that her “visionary insights and ability to translate innovation into commercial success will ensure our technologies continue to create value for licensees, retailers, and end-users worldwide.”
The appointment of a CTO with such a diverse technological background strongly suggests that i4F is setting its sights on a larger technological sphere. The company’s focus on extending its IP and technology management expertise to industries beyond flooring represents a forward-thinking business model.
By applying their mastery of complex patent management, licensing models, and R&D strategy—honed through successfully commercialising flooring innovations globally—i4F can potentially identify and nurture new technology verticals. Dr. Hermans’ experience in sectors like chemicals and pharmaceuticals provides a powerful conduit for this cross-pollination of ideas and intellectual property. This strategic pivot positions i4F not merely as a flooring technology provider, but as a robust IP and innovation management group capable of generating value across multiple high-tech markets.
This move reinforces the emerging trend of technology convergence, where materials science and digital innovation developed for one sector, such as durable, easy-to-install, and hyper-realistic flooring, can be adapted and applied to other building materials or even consumer products. Dr. Hermans’ leadership is expected to be the driving force behind this expansion, connecting with industrial partners and licensees to “unleash a valuable future, together.”
