Finnos celebrates their fastest installation of 100 scanners in record time

 Friday, June 13, 2025

Finnos installs faster than one can say ‘industrial revolution 4.0.’ But Finnos seriously means it! They have installed over 100 scanners in record time and they have just getting started.

JPJ-Wood enhances production with Finnos Technology

JPJ-Wood Oy, a family-owned sawmill established in 1994, is located in Juupajoki, Pirkanmaa. As a significant wood processor, the company strives to stay at the forefront of industry development. To ensure this, they regularly invest in the latest technology.

“We have already previously invested in the Fusion system for log sorting, Log Yard Control for log yard management, Lite XR for sawmill feeding, and this summer, the Board Scanner will be installed for our green sorting,” says Markus Luodelahti, CEO and owner of JPJ-Wood.

“The investments were driven by the need for a new and more reliable X-ray measurement system for log sorting. Additionally, the sawmill infeed scanner had reached the end of its lifecycle. Finnos provided a comprehensive solution that met our needs,” Luodelahti explains.

Luodelahti is pleased with Finnos as a partner: “Our experience with Finnos, from purchasing and installation to maintenance services and necessary updates, has been excellent throughout our collaboration.”

According to Luodelahti, the products function reliably and have added value to the production process. “The accuracy of log measurement and grading is critical to the sawmill’s operations and profitability. Thanks to reliable measurement, each log can be sawn individually and as profitably as possible,” he states.

In addition to well-executed projects, high-quality products, and efficient maintenance and helpdesk services, Finnos earns praise from Luodelahti for its commitment to product development. “Finnos’ continuous drive to improve its products and operations aligns with our own goals. I can highly recommend Finnos as a partner,” Luodelahti concludes.

Keitele relies on Finnos solutions

Keitele Timber Oy is one of Finland’s leading sawmill industry players, continuously investing in technological development and production efficiency. According to CEO Matti Kylävainio, the company’s goal has been to improve production efficiency by utilising modern technology.

Finnos’ technological solutions for log and sawn timber scanning
Keitele had previously chosen Finnos Fusions log measurement systems for all three of its sawmills. “Now, a full quality board scanner was needed for the new upcoming dry sorting line, and in addition, the board scanners for dry sorting lines at Alajärvi and Kemijärvi will also be renewed with Finnos systems,” Kylävainio explains. One of the main reasons for selecting Finnos was the technical suitability of its solutions for Keitele’s needs. According to Kylävainio, Finnos’ convincing implementation of the previous log scanner installations and commissionings also influenced the decision.

The benefits and added value of technology
Finnos’ technology not only met Keitele’s needs but also enabled the standardisation of processes across the all three sawmills. Kylävainio mentions that Finnos’ measurement systems allow quality sorting to be done in the same way at all three facilities, which will improve both production efficiency and value yield.

Partnership has met expectations
Although Keitele Timber has so far only had experience with Finnos’ log scanners, the collaboration and the performance of these systems have already been convincing. “The scanners have worked well. Replacing and commissioning them in the middle of ongoing production was a large and challenging undertaking, but it was successfully accomplished,” Kylävainio states.

Kylävainio notes that the cooperation with Finnos has so far met expectations, and Keitele would recommend Finnos as a partner for similar projects in the future.

The collaboration between Finnos and Keitele is an example of how top-tier technology can bring tangible improvements to the sawmill industry. Finnos’ solutions have helped Keitele optimise raw material usage, improve quality, and enhance production efficiency—three factors that are critical to sawmill industry.

Groupe Lebel aims to new heights with the help of Finnos

To boost the productivity of their sawmill in Squatec, Groupe Lebel has chosen Finnos as their Yield Enhancement Partner (YEP). And for good reasons too, make no mistake.

Reason No. 1 – Advanced log sorting

With Finnos, log sorting is so simple, it’s practically automatic. Their scanners analaze all things wood, such as wood species, under bark, geometry, shape, and internal quality of a given log. They also detect foreign objects lodged in the log. Now that they have all the data, Finnos’s bespoke algorithms take care of the sorting business on their own.

Reason No. 2 – Adapting ad infinitum
Let’s face it. Each project has some hurdles to overcome, and each customer their own challenges. With Groupe Lebel, the challenge was geographical: their R&D happening primarily in Finland, they had zero to none previous experience with wood species around the Quebec area. But this is something we had planned for (thanks, our ingenious engineers)! See there’s this small tool called AI that handles the detection of species and many other things as well for them, so the basic principle of recognizing a given species works, they just have to teach the machine with different types of data.

Reason No. 3 – Green. So much green.
Green as in money. Also trees. But mainly money. See the thing is more yield = more money, and Finnos is an expert in maximising yield: for example their log scanners, equipped with myriad sensors (X-ray, lasers, color cameras, etc.), are capable of measuring the ins and outs of a log e.g. the under bark diameter, knots and rot. This, when met with any log receiving, is a surefire way to acquire material in a more transparent manner, and also to optimise sawing patterns down the line. Which is important to, again, maximise yield.

Reason No. 4 – Cooperation
This is the best part, the fruitiest fruit of our already fruitful customer relationship. It takes the power of something magical called cooperation to streamline the process and ensure a fluent project. And cooperation with Groupe Lebel has been quite smooth indeed thanks to mutual and thorough planning and preparation, both of which were started early on. Due to this early planning phase, their customers get to help them customise their scanners to fit their needs. For Groupe Lebel one such customisation was rot detection with end cameras, which is under development in – you guessed it – cooperation with the customer.

All in all, Finnos is already seeing promising yield results from the new Groupe Lebel log sorting line, and it’s just a start for them, a long way to go!!
