wood sustainability in Finland

Finland, a country renowned for its vast forests and innovative wood products, is leading the charge towards sustainability in the global timber industry. At the heart of this movement lies TMW Raahe, a new production facility that promises to reshape the future of Finnish forestry. On September 18, 2025, TMW Raahe celebrated its official opening in Raahe, showcasing decades of Finnish expertise in the wood industry, combining innovation, sustainability, and environmental responsibility.

The celebration gathered an impressive crowd, including customers, industry partners, and government representatives. Among the notable figures present was Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, Sari Essayah, who highlighted Finland’s commitment to sustainable forestry during her opening speech.

“High value-added wood products bind carbon while creating vitality and jobs in Finland. A forest-based bioeconomy is one of Finland’s key strengths for succeeding and maintaining competitiveness. Wood as a raw material can replace fossil-based materials and reduce critical dependencies – and that is why investments in the wood products industry are of vital importance,” Minister Essayah said.

TMW Raahe’s Green Commitment

The TMW Raahe plant is built upon the principles of sustainability. Every product manufactured at the facility is made entirely from Finnish wood, using only heat and steam, with no chemical additives involved. This process ensures the production of natural, recyclable wood products that are designed to endure the test of time and the elements.

By focusing on sustainable production methods, TMW Raahe not only delivers high-quality, environmentally-friendly products but also strengthens Finland’s regional economy. The plant plays a key role in fostering job creation and driving sustainable economic growth, reinforcing Finland’s commitment to a greener future.

The plant’s opening marks a significant milestone in Finland’s green journey, as the company aims to provide global customers with responsible wood products that respect the values of Finnish forests.

Valmet’s Beyond Circularity Program: A Game-Changer for Green Transition

As Finland’s wood industry embraces sustainable practices, other key players in the country are also making strides towards a more eco-conscious future. One of the most notable initiatives is Valmet’s Beyond Circularity program. Running for four years as part of Business Finland’s Veturi initiative, the program has helped advance sustainability through over 370 industry partners, working to reduce carbon footprints and promote green technologies.

Olli Hänninen, Executive Vice President of Strategy and Transformation at Valmet, spoke about the program’s success: “The results of Beyond Circularity strengthen Valmet’s position as a technology leader in the green transition. We are proud of the progress made and we continue developing solutions that help our customers achieve carbon neutrality, in line with our strategy and purpose. We are transforming industries towards a regenerative tomorrow.”

The program’s impact has been widespread, as Valmet has collaborated across various business sectors, integrating solutions that support industries striving for carbon neutrality. In particular, the program’s focus on recycling, resource efficiency, bio-refining, and automation has contributed to Finland’s vision of a sustainable bioeconomy.

Raute focuses on Green Veneer Composing: Revolutionising Plywood Manufacturing

Another critical area where Finland is leading the way is in plywood manufacturing. As the plywood, LVL (laminated veneer lumber), and veneer-based industries strive for greater sustainability, innovations like green veneer composing are transforming production processes. This innovative technique maximizes plywood recovery and efficiency while minimizing environmental impact.

By improving material use and reducing labor-intensive steps, green veneer composing enhances the uniformity of plywood sheets and increases overall manufacturing efficiency. This not only reduces production costs but also helps mitigate the environmental degradation associated with timber production. The technique promises to reshape the plywood industry, making it more competitive and eco-friendly.

Conclusion: Finland’s Role in Sustainable Forestry

Finland’s wood industry is at the forefront of the global green revolution, driven by sustainable production practices, advanced technologies, and a commitment to environmental responsibility. Whether it’s TMW Raahe’s cutting-edge thermally modified wood production or Valmet’s transformative Beyond Circularity program, Finland is setting the benchmark for how the timber industry can evolve to meet the demands of a greener future.

As the world looks towards more sustainable and eco-friendly solutions, Finland’s leadership in responsible forestry practices offers a model for others to follow. With ongoing innovations in wood products and sustainability programs, Finland is proving that a sustainable future is not only possible but thriving.
