The Daramu House in Sydney and its sister building, the International House, stand as examples of innovative timber architecture and successful international collaboration. Strategically positioned next to Australia’s first commercial multi-story timber office building, Daramu House sets new standards.
The name “Daramu” – “tree” in Australia’s indigenous language – reflects the project’s deep connection to nature. Timber was deliberately chosen as the primary building material for both projects.
The six-story office building with 10,000 m² floor space in Barangaroo South demonstrates modern timber construction performance. The centerpiece: revolutionary composite beams – a development of technology first used in International House Sydney. These innovative glued laminated timber composite components with beech laminated veneer lumber enable large openings without compromising load-bearing capacity or requiring steel reinforcements.
Prefabricated glulam components were shipped from Germany to Australia and assembled on-site. This approach enabled a remarkably short construction time of seven months. With 2,290 m³ glulam from spruce and beech, the HASSLACHER group delivered customized solutions through HESS TIMBER GmbH and HASSLACHER Holzbauteile GmbH & Co. KG.
Realized under Lendlease Australia and architect Tzannes, Daramu House received prestigious awards including Australian Timber Design Award 2020 and Green Good Design Award 2021. The Daramu House exemplifies commercial construction’s future, showing how innovative timber technology, renewable materials and precise execution achieve exceptional results. The project demonstrates international competitiveness and technical expertise in timber solutions.
