In his latest column, Philip Berger, Head of Application Technology at Robert Bürkle GmbH, addresses the growing need for sustainability in the wood and furniture industry. He explores how companies can simultaneously reduce environmental impact and cut costs by optimizing production processes.

Making production more sustainable while minimizing costs was once considered a paradox, but it’s becoming a strategic priority for manufacturers. Sustainability and cost optimization are no longer mutually exclusive. In fact, the most sustainable products often have the lowest energy and material consumption, directly contributing to cost savings in production.

The key lies in applying efficiency-enhancing functions and optimized designs in production systems. For example, advanced sensor systems in the roller application process allow real-time monitoring of paint quantities, leading to savings of 10-20% in material usage. These innovations improve both sustainability and profitability.

Energy savings also present significant opportunities, though they require careful analysis. The shift from mercury vapor lamps to LED technology for curing UV coatings, for instance, can reduce energy consumption by up to 50%. However, manufacturers must consider the necessary adjustments to materials and processes to fully capitalize on these energy savings.

Furthermore, mechanical engineering advances, such as energy-efficient drive systems and regenerative braking technologies, enable manufacturers to cut energy consumption without altering existing production processes.

While these technologies require initial investment, the long-term savings in materials and energy often lead to quick returns on investment. Therefore, embracing sustainable production technologies not only improves environmental performance but also drives cost efficiency.

In conclusion, the shift toward more sustainable and cost-efficient production processes is no longer optional for the wood and furniture industry. With technological advancements, manufacturers can optimize their processes to save both energy and materials, ensuring a greener, more profitable future.
