Construction companies across the UK have an opportunity to benefit financially by returning bright green LOOP pallets for reuse, as part of a scheme operated by The Pallet LOOP, a circular economy initiative within the BSW Group. New figures reveal that businesses in the construction sector can claim a share of more than £1.5 million by participating in the program.
In its first six months, The Pallet LOOP has issued over 450,000 distinctive green reusable pallets to British Gypsum for transporting bagged plaster and plasterboard products. With a financial incentive of up to £4 per returned pallet, businesses that opt into the LOOP collection system stand to gain significantly. A growing number of companies, including builders’ merchants, principal contractors, and housebuilders, are already capitalizing on the initiative.
To date, The Pallet LOOP has distributed approximately £150,000 in PayBack rewards to users of the scheme. The initiative is seeing increasing engagement, with the return rate for green pallets reaching about 30% of the pallets issued in October—a significant improvement over the construction sector’s historical pallet return rate of around 10%.
Alongside financial rewards, companies using The Pallet LOOP can achieve substantial savings on waste costs and reduce their carbon footprint. The Pallet LOOP estimates that companies returning pallets have collectively saved up to £800,000 on skip costs, as wood skip disposal can cost up to £8 per pallet. By combining the £4 LOOP PayBack with the cost avoidance, companies could see a net benefit of up to £12 per pallet returned.
Paul Lewis, Founder of The Pallet LOOP, emphasized the dual benefits of the scheme: “Getting a financial reward for returning pallets, and saving on waste costs is good news for merchants, principal contractors and housebuilding companies up and down the country as they face fresh operational headwinds and get to grips with changes coming into force as part of the recent budget. From the start, our model was designed to be financially equitable for everyone in the building materials supply chain, as well as better for the environment. What we’ve achieved in the first six months shows our vision is now a reality.”
Participants in The Pallet LOOP also gain access to sustainability data through the initiative’s Power BI platform, providing insights into their pallet returns. Looking ahead, The Pallet LOOP anticipates significant growth. From December, insulation materials from Isover will begin moving on LOOP pallets, and discussions are underway with other manufacturers interested in adopting the scheme. By 2025, The Pallet LOOP expects to issue over 2.5 million pallets, potentially creating a PayBack pool of up to £10 million.
“For companies in construction, now is the time to get in the LOOP and start sending back green pallets,” Lewis added.
Each year, over 20 million pallets are manufactured to transport building materials, with most discarded after a single use. The Pallet LOOP’s reusable pallet system, supported by a nationwide collection service and robust financial incentives, offers a practical solution to this longstanding issue. The initiative represents a greener, safer, and more cost-effective approach to transporting building materials—benefiting both businesses and the environment.
