Confor Wales’ National Manager, Anthony Geddes and Virginia Crosbie, an Anglesey MP inspected a new house development that makes use of locally sourced Welsh timber and local forests in Pentraeth. Welsh timber and wood fibre insulation and frames is being utilised in the construction of 48 affordable houses and six flats, beginning from the Wlliams Homes (Bala) and Clywd Alyn site in Pentraeth. The purpose of the visit was to highlight the prospects that the forestry and timber industry may provide for Anglesey’s economic development. Ms. Penny Lofts, the Land and Acquisitions Manager for Williams Homes, gave visitors a tour of the property while describing the distinctive features of this development and the many advantages of using timber in building. Due to their excellent energy efficiency, the buildings, which contain solar panels and an air source heat pump, are low carbon and will have affordable operating expenses.

“Forestry and wood utilisation is a sector that will expand in Wales”

At the nearby Pentraeth Forest, the tour continued. Virginia had previously visited the area, well-known for its red squirrel population, with Dr. Craig Shuttleworth, a red squirrel authority from Bangor University. Explaining the significance of maintaining forests and woodlands in the protection of red squirrels was best done while strolling through the forest. Virginia concluded her tour by pointing out that forestry and wood utilisation is a sector that will expand in Wales and offer more jobs and quality housing to Anglesey, as well as conserving and enhancing the local environment and boosting the local economy. She anticipates assisting Confor in their endeavours.

Anthony discussed all the efforts made by Confor to remove obstacles to tree planting and ensure the long-term supply of domestic timber required to increase the number of homes made of wood. The rise of wood use in construction might lead to new industrial opportunities as well as skilled professions, according to him.

Virginia said: “I am very impressed with the quality of these new homes and the many advantages of using timber, both with regards to our net zero targets and helping people save money on energy bills. The fact that the wood products used here are all made in Wales highlights the great opportunity we have to grow the local economy by supporting the forestry sector.”
