CERATIZIT has achieved notable progress in executing its ambitious sustainability strategy, as highlighted during the AMB international metalworking exhibition, where the company presented its key performance indicators. According to the recently published sustainability report by the Plansee Group, to which CERATIZIT belongs, several defined targets have been surpassed. CERATIZIT’s sustainability approach centers on four main pillars: sustainable product and technology innovation, enhancing material and resource efficiency in production, fostering attractive working conditions, and integrating both ecological and social considerations within the supply chain.

CO2 footprint reduced by 22 percent

An important key performance indicator in the first phase is the corporate carbon footprint (CCF). In the 2023 financial year, CERATIZIT was able to reduce the CCF by 22 percent compared to the base year 2020, from 201,449 tonnes of CO2e to 156,988 tonnes of CO2e (Scope 1, 2 and 3). The company is therefore well on track to achieve its target of a 35 per cent reduction by the 2025 financial year.

Recycling rate exceeds targets

Another important performance metric is the recycling rate of tungsten, the primary raw material. In 2023, the company surpassed its target of 90%, achieving an impressive recycling rate of 95%. Andreas Lackner, Spokesman of the CERATIZIT Executive Board, emphasises: “In our sustainability strategy, we are focusing on those areas in which we can achieve the greatest impact. We not only want to become more sustainable, we also want to be a pioneer and role model in our industries.”

Melissa Albeck, Member of the CERATIZIT Executive Board, adds: “After initially focusing on reducing our carbon footprint and increasing the recycling rate for tungsten, we are now also increasingly focusing on the topics of attractive working conditions and ecological and social aspects in the supply chain.” Based on extensive surveys of employees and suppliers, CERATIZIT will be taking more measures in the coming months to guarantee attractive working conditions and ensure ecological and social aspects along the supply chain.

Closing the loop

At AMB, CERATIZIT showcased its ProACT-Mill milling cutters, which not only deliver up to 30% longer tool life but are also developed using the more sustainable upGRADE carbide, CT-GS20Y. This carbide grade stands out for containing over 99% reclaimed carbide powder, significantly conserving valuable raw material resources. With the ProACT-Mill range, CERATIZIT completes the sustainability cycle by purchasing, reprocessing, and reusing worn carbide tools, all the way to producing the finished tools. This approach sets a benchmark for sustainable and resource-efficient manufacturing.
