ANDRITZ secures major order for recovery boiler from Nippon Paper Industries

Nippon Paper Industries Co., Ltd. has selected ANDRITZ, a global technology leader, to supply a new chemical recovery boiler for its Ishinomaki pulp mill in Japan. The order includes advanced automation and digitalization solutions, aiming to maximise the boiler’s efficiency and operational potential. The project is expected to significantly enhance the mill’s sustainability while improving its economic performance.

The financial value of the order has not been disclosed but is included in ANDRITZ’s order intake for Q2 2025. The installation of the new recovery boiler is scheduled for start-up in 2028, marking a major milestone in Nippon Paper Industries’ commitment to reducing its environmental impact.

Key Features of the New Recovery Boiler

ANDRITZ will supply a state-of-the-art recovery boiler with a capacity of 2,200 tds/d, featuring steam parameters of 8.3 MPa and 505°C. The design of the boiler focuses on long operating periods and is complemented by several advanced automation and digitalization solutions. This next-generation boiler will enable the shutdown of an existing coal-fired boiler and two recovery boilers, resulting in a significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions at the Ishinomaki mill.

A notable aspect of this project is the introduction of a high-dry solids concentrator, designed to increase the dry solids concentration of the firing black liquor. This enhancement will improve the recovery boiler’s efficiency by optimizing the chemical recovery process.

Additionally, the project will include an ash leaching system to remove chloride and potassium from the electrostatic precipitator’s ash. This system will recover sodium and sulfate to be reintegrated into the chemical recovery cycle, further improving the sustainability of mill operations.

Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Promoting Sustainability

The new recovery boiler will have a crucial impact on Nippon Paper Industries’ environmental footprint. By replacing older, less efficient boilers with the high-efficiency system from ANDRITZ, the Ishinomaki mill will substantially reduce its greenhouse gas emissions. This aligns with Nippon Paper Industries’ ongoing efforts to strengthen its sustainability initiatives and improve the environmental performance of its operations.

Mr. Yoshinori Matsubara, Executive Officer and Head of the Energy Business Division at Nippon Paper Industries, commented, “We are very pleased that this new high-efficiency recovery boiler will make a significant contribution to reducing greenhouse gas emissions at the Ishinomaki mill. We aim to strengthen our international competitiveness by utilizing the learnings from this project at our other mills.”

ANDRITZ’s Commitment to Efficient and Sustainable Technology

Masato Tsuchitana, General Manager at ANDRITZ in Japan, expressed his gratitude for the trust placed in the company, saying, “We greatly appreciate the trust that Nippon Paper Industries has placed in the ANDRITZ team and our technical solutions. Our approach to the supplied technology represents the best solution in terms of process and efficiency, and operation cost. We look forward to executing this project and to extending our collaboration in the future.”

ANDRITZ’s expertise in providing advanced technological solutions for pulp mills is evident in this order. The company has positioned itself as a global leader in supplying environmentally friendly pulp mill technology, with a particular focus on efficiency, sustainability, and cost-effectiveness.

A Strong Partnership for the Future

This project will also be executed in cooperation with the Japanese EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) supplier, Kanadevia. The collaboration between ANDRITZ and Kanadevia is set to ensure the successful delivery of the new recovery boiler and related systems, marking a significant step in the ongoing partnership between the two companies.

As part of the deal, ANDRITZ will provide comprehensive support through its advanced services and solutions, ensuring the new system’s seamless integration and optimal performance. With the new boiler set to contribute to the Ishinomaki mill’s long-term sustainability goals, ANDRITZ continues to demonstrate its leadership in the pulp and paper industry.
