ANDRITZ powers the future of renewable energy with the torrefaction reactor

Internationally recognised technological group ANDRITZ delivers the torrefaction reactor and puts it into one of the biggest industrial torrefaction plants in Europe. It was created by Joensuu Biocoal Oy and run by Taaleri in Finland. Utilising biomass sourced sustainably, notably pre-commercial thinnings of Finland’s certified forests, the facility creates a renewable substitute for fossil coal.

The novel torrefaction reactor transforms biomass into advanced biomass, also known as biocoal, a product rich in carbon. With permission from NextFuel, the reactor was produced at the ANDRITZ workshop in Graz, Austria. ANDRITZ also provided the Metris addIQ system for torrefaction process control in addition to the reactor. In Joensuu, where Joensuu Biocoal’s plant is situated, the reactor was set up at the new bio-industrial facility on the site of Savon Voima Oyj’s combined heat and power plant. A maximum of 60,000 tons of bio-coal will be produced annually by the reactor. In many industrial uses, this renewable fuel will take the place of fossil coal, resulting in huge CO2 savings and assisting the worldwide movement towards carbon neutrality.

“We are very proud to contribute to one of the largest torrefaction plants in Europe. This milestone underscores ANDRITZ’s commitment to innovation and sustainability by providing renewable energy solutions that support a greener future,” exclaims Stefan Peter, Global Product Group Manager at ANDRITZ.

Taaleri Plc, several Finnish family-owned investment firms, and the Finnish Climate Fund are funding the Joensuu Biocoal production facility. The European Regional Development Fund is another source of funding for the project.
