Fibre-based specialty materials manufacturer Ahlstrom has reaffirmed its long-term commitment to children’s education by strengthening its support for Ahlström Collective Impact (ACI), a collaborative initiative developed to expand educational opportunities and promote children’s rights worldwide.

The company continues to play a leading role as one of the founding partners of the initiative. This year, ACI has increased its financial commitment by contributing more than EUR 850,000 to UNICEF Finland’s Global Education Fund. The increased contribution demonstrates the growing involvement of private sector organisations in addressing global educational challenges.

Ahlström Collective Impact now brings together 13 member organisations, including companies, foundations and members of the wider Ahlström family network. The partnership works closely with UNICEF Finland to improve access to quality education while encouraging participating organisations to integrate child-focused thinking into business operations and investment decisions.

The initiative reflects a long-term approach rather than a one-off charitable programme. It has been designed to support sustainable improvements in children’s education across different regions of the world.

Global education remains under significant pressure.

Many low and middle-income countries continue to experience learning gaps. Limited access to quality education and digital learning resources affects millions of children. Basic literacy skills remain out of reach for many young learners. These challenges have been intensified by continuing economic uncertainty and global instability.

According to Annina Tanhuanpää, Executive Director of UNICEF Finland, improving educational outcomes requires stronger collaboration between humanitarian organisations and the private sector.

She highlighted that unequal access to digital learning tools continues to hinder educational progress in many communities. Greater business participation is therefore regarded as an important factor in closing these gaps and strengthening children’s future opportunities.

The expanded contribution from Ahlström Collective Impact has been welcomed as an example of how long-term corporate partnerships can help support UNICEF’s global education programmes during increasingly complex international conditions.

Beyond financial support, the initiative encourages participating businesses to consider children’s rights within everyday corporate decision-making.

Nelli Paasikivi-Ahlström, Chair of Ahlström Collective Impact, said the organisation aims to demonstrate how children’s wellbeing can become an integral part of business strategy rather than being treated solely as a corporate responsibility programme.

She explained that member organisations seek to embed a child-centred perspective into investment decisions, operational planning and long-term business development. Protecting and promoting children’s rights is viewed as a core principle across the partnership.

For Ahlstrom, participation in the initiative reflects a long-standing commitment that extends beyond commercial activities.

The company has maintained close links with community development and educational programmes throughout its history. As one of the founding members of Ahlström Collective Impact, it continues the philanthropic tradition established by the Ahlström family over several generations.
