Koskisen launched the world’s first fully bio-based Zero furniture board a few years ago. Zero products combine side streams from Koskisen’s other business operations with a lignin-based binder.
According to Mika Reini, Sales Director of Koskisen’s Panel Industry, there have been two key drivers behind this exceptional innovation. “Firstly, there is a growing market demand for bio-based solutions. Consumers are increasingly aware of factors such as indoor air quality and the climate and environmental impacts of products, and Zero meets these needs,” Reini explains.
The second significant factor, Reini highlights, is Koskisen’s strategy, which emphasises climate and environmental responsibility. “It’s one of the cornerstones of our company strategy,” Reini says.
Zero products are a concrete example of Koskisen’s product development that supports the circular economy. “For instance, in the production of furniture and construction panels within the Zero product family, we utilise not only the bio-based lignin binder but also side streams from Koskisen’s other operations, such as the Sawmill and Panel industries, as primary raw materials. This reduces waste, supports sustainable development, and makes the product a strong domestic circular economy solution. The goal of product development is fundamentally to design products that comprehensively take sustainable development principles into account,” Reini states.
Positive market reception for Zero products
According to Reini, Zero products have been received very positively. Sales have grown steadily, and interest has expanded beyond Finland’s borders. “Zero products have attracted attention from Scandinavia, the United States, and Asia.”
In addition to support from an expert sales organisation and a reseller network, customers have also discovered Zero products independently, which Reini views as evidence of genuine demand and successful marketing. For example, Zero furniture boards were used in the Varjo mini-house project. “Although the construction market has faced challenges in recent years, demand for Zero products has grown, and new customers are coming in steadily,” Reini notes. “The feedback we’ve received has been extremely positive, and the features of the products are seen as a clear competitive advantage.” Reini added further.
Zero products have also gained recognition in competitions: at the Jyväskylä Wood Fair, the Zero furniture board won the 2023 new product competition, and the Zero ThinPly received international acclaim at the Interzum fair in Cologne in 2025.
Limitless applications for Zero Products
Zero products meet technical requirements such as transverse tensile strength and bending strength, making them fully suitable for the same applications as traditional panel products. “The use of Zero is based on the same performance as standard products, with the added value of being bio-based, which reduces the carbon footprint. The traditional adhesives and coatings of the panels are a significant source of emissions,” Reini clarifies.
Zero boards are an excellent choice for both the furniture and construction industries. Zero ThinPly veneer, on the other hand, is ideal for design products such as lamps, jewellery, and other special applications. Zero offers solutions for projects where Koskisen’s well-known high technical quality and sustainability are desired. Zero products have been awarded the Nordic Swan Ecolabel and M1 emission classification.
“The demand for Zero products is growing, driven by both consumer preferences and also regulatory requirements, as legislation increasingly mandates sustainably manufactured products both in terms of production and raw materials. This strengthens Zero’s position in the market,” Reini added. “It’s fair to say the outlook is very positive.” Reini concludes.
