Xylotek-Wood Award 2025

The landscape of modern architecture is undergoing a “timber revolution,” and the Wood Awards 2025 have once again highlighted the pioneers leading the charge. This year, the spotlight shone brightly on Xylotek, the specialist timber firm that walked away with some of the evening’s most prestigious accolades. By securing two category wins—including the coveted Gold Award—and a Highly Commended distinction, Xylotek has solidified its reputation as a global leader in complex wood structures.

The Wood Awards, hosted by Timber Development UK, remain the UK’s premier competition for excellence in architecture, furniture, and interior design using wood. The 2025 ceremony celebrated projects that push the boundaries of what is possible with engineered timber, focusing on sustainability, structural integrity, and aesthetic brilliance.

The standout success of the night was the Urban Nature Project at the Natural History Museum, a collaboration between Xylotek and the renowned architectural firm Feilden Fowles. This transformative project didn’t just win its category; it captured the hearts of the judges to secure the Gold Award (Overall Winner) for 2025.

The Urban Nature Project serves as a biological “living laboratory” in the heart of London. The timber elements within the scheme demonstrate a profound respect for the natural world, utilising wood not just as a structural medium but as a storytelling tool. The jury praised the project for its seamless integration of high-tech timber fabrication with the organic needs of a public educational space.

By winning the Gold Award, Xylotek and Feilden Fowles have set a new benchmark for how public institutions can utilize timber to meet net-zero goals while creating spaces that are visually breathtaking and highly functional.

Adding to their success, Xylotek received a Highly Commended distinction in the Public & Education category for the Rafter Walk at Canada Water, designed in partnership with Asif Khan Ltd.

Canada Water is currently one of London’s most ambitious regeneration projects, and the Rafter Walk stands as a testament to the power of timber in urban infrastructure. The project features intricate wood detailing that provides a warm, tactile contrast to the surrounding glass and steel of the developing district. The “Highly Commended” status recognises the technical difficulty and the exquisite finish achieved by the Xylotek team in bringing Asif Khan’s vision to life.

The success of Xylotek at the 2025 Wood Awards reflects a broader trend within the global construction industry. As developers face increasing pressure to reduce embodied carbon, timber has moved from a niche material to a primary structural choice.

Timber Development UK, the event’s organisers, emphasised that this year’s entries demonstrated an unprecedented level of sophistication. From Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT) to traditional hand-finished joinery, the diversity of the projects suggests that the industry is successfully blending heritage craftsmanship with digital manufacturing.

Xylotek’s wins are particularly significant because they highlight the role of the “Specialist Timber Contractor.” Unlike general contractors, specialist firms like Xylotek bridge the gap between complex architectural geometry and the physical realities of wood as a living, breathing material.

Following the announcement, a spokesperson for Xylotek expressed the company’s pride in the collaborative nature of these projects. “We are delighted to share our success at the Wood Awards 2025. These awards are a brilliant reflection of the creativity and innovation driving the timber industry today. A huge congratulations to all teams involved, and we extend our deepest thanks to Timber Development UK for hosting such an inspiring event.”

The 2025 Wood Awards serve as a reminder that the future of the built environment is inherently linked to sustainable forestry and innovative timber engineering. With companies like Xylotek at the helm, that future looks exceptionally bright.
