The Wood Recyclers’ Association (WRA) has achieved a significant milestone by being shortlisted for the prestigious Trade Association Forum Awards for the third consecutive year. The WRA has been named as a finalist in the highly competitive “Sector Representation of the Year” category, a title recognising the exceptional efforts of trade associations in advocating for their sector.
The Trade Association Forum Awards are the UK’s leading accolades, celebrating the vital work done by trade associations across various industries. These awards highlight the associations that have excelled in representing their sector, advancing their interests, and supporting the wider industry.
The WRA’s shortlisting for the 2026 awards comes in recognition of its dedication to representing and supporting the wood recycling sector. With over 120 member companies, the WRA’s membership encompasses more than 90% of the UK’s wood recyclers and reprocessors. This influential body has a well-established track record in advocating for policies that benefit the sector and raise awareness of the industry’s environmental and economic importance.
The “Sector Representation of the Year” category, sponsored by the Department for Business & Trade, specifically honours trade associations that have demonstrated the most effective representation of their sector over the past year. The WRA’s ongoing collaboration with key regulators such as the Environment Agency, DEFRA, and DESNZ plays a central role in the association’s success. These partnerships enable the WRA to advocate for legislative changes, policy updates, and the overall wellbeing of the industry.
In the past year, the WRA has focused its efforts on critical issues, including waste wood storage regulations, biomass advocacy, and the development of sector-specific standards. One of the key highlights of their work was the launch of the RPS 352 (Regulatory Position Statement) in June 2025. This new framework addresses the safe storage of waste wood, providing clarity and guidelines that benefit both recyclers and regulators.
Furthermore, the WRA’s continued efforts in biomass advocacy have proven instrumental in promoting the role of biomass as a renewable energy source. Through these efforts, the WRA ensures that the wood recycling sector is positioned as a key contributor to the UK’s green energy initiatives.
The WRA was previously “Highly Commended” in the same category at the 2025 Trade Association Forum Awards for its work on Waste Wood Classification. This recognition further solidified the association’s reputation as a leader in driving forward positive change in the sector.
Julia Turner, Executive Director of the WRA, expressed her pride and gratitude for the recognition, stating: “It is such an honour to be shortlisted for these awards for the third year running alongside so many other amazing trade bodies. This shows that the work we do on behalf of our members is being consistently recognised and helps to further raise the profile of our sector. We wish all the finalists the very best of luck!”
The WRA was founded in 2001 by a group of dedicated wood recyclers with the aim of improving industry standards and ensuring the sector’s voice was heard at all levels of government and policy-making. Today, the association continues to operate under the guidance of a board of nine members, eight of whom are elected by the membership and serve voluntarily. The Executive Director leads the association’s efforts and represents the members’ interests.
The WRA’s activities include regular meetings where industry professionals gather to discuss key issues such as environmental regulations, market trends, and future opportunities. These meetings often feature presentations from experts and thought leaders, providing valuable insights into emerging technologies and practices in the recycling sector. The association also aims to facilitate at least one company site tour per year, offering members the chance to learn firsthand about new practices and innovations within the industry.
The announcement of the winners for each category will take place at the Trade Association Forum Awards ceremony on 26 February 2026 in London. The event will bring together industry leaders, policymakers, and stakeholders to celebrate the outstanding contributions made by trade associations throughout the UK.
The WRA’s continued success in these awards is a testament to its ongoing commitment to improving the wood recycling industry and providing a strong voice for its members. The association remains focused on enhancing industry standards, promoting sustainability, and ensuring that the interests of the sector are represented at the highest levels of government and industry.
In conclusion, the WRA’s shortlisting for the “Sector Representation of the Year” category at the 2026 Trade Association Forum Awards is an acknowledgment of its exceptional work. The association’s efforts to collaborate with regulators, advocate for waste wood storage solutions, and promote the role of biomass as a renewable energy source have set a benchmark for industry leadership. As the sector continues to evolve, the WRA remains committed to supporting its members and driving positive change for the future of wood recycling.
