The Wood Awards is excited to announce the introduction of a new Sustainability Award for 2023 that recognises and celebrates sustainable practices in wood. Building upon the rich heritage of the Wood Awards, which has passionately championed wood’s integration into design and architecture for over half a century, this introduction marks an important milestone.
Sustainability is a crucial aspect of modern design, and the responsible use of wood can play a significant role in reducing the carbon footprint of the built environment. The Sustainability Award will highlight projects that have used wood in innovative and highly sustainable ways, promoting best practices and inspiring others to follow suit.
“Over the past eighteen years, the construction industry has undergone a remarkable transformation, and there is now a much greater awareness of the environmental performance of projects. This year, along with the introduction of the Sustainability Award, we have brought in Neil Smith from Max Fordham. Having his expertise on the judging panel, along with formalising the entry forms and the data we gather, will support us to make comparative assessments between projects,” Jim Greaves, Hopkins Architects, and lead building judge.
Eligible projects for the Sustainability Award will demonstrate the use of wood to minimise negative environmental impacts and maximise positive social benefits. This could include, for example, ethical timber sourcing; low-carbon, zero-carbon, or even negative-carbon projects; environmentally friendly construction techniques; design for disassembly and reuse.
The Sustainability Award will be open to all building categories of the Wood Awards: Restoration & Reuse, Commercial & Leisure, Education & Public Sector, Private Sector, Small Project, and Interior. The Wood Awards Sustainability Award will be judged by a panel of experts in the fields of architecture, design, and sustainability. The judges will assess each project on its sustainability credentials, as well as its design and technique. The winning project will receive a trophy and certificate, as well as recognition in the Wood Awards publicity and events.
Entries for the Wood Awards 2023 are open, with the submission deadline set for June 23, 2023.
