At its headquarters in Coalisland, Northern Ireland, Western, one of the top offsite construction experts in the UK, has spent £1 million on a state-of-the-art, fully automated timber panel production line. This investment is a component of a larger, multi-million-pound project that aims to advance the industry’s transition to greener, more efficient building systems, optimise operational efficiency, and modernise the company’s production capabilities.
The new timber panel production line, developed in partnership with Modular Building Automation and JJ Smith Woodworking Machinery, combines the latest in automation technology with advanced digital design tools. This system is specifically designed to meet the increasing demand for faster, more energy-efficient construction methods while also promoting higher precision and safety in timber panel manufacturing.
Innovation at the core of construction manufacturing
Western’s new investment integrates next-generation machinery designed to significantly reduce manual labor while improving safety and precision in the production of open and closed timber wall panels. The heart of this innovation lies in a series of automated equipment that streamlines the entire manufacturing process.
X-FRAME assembly station: This CNC-controlled station automates critical tasks such as the placement, clamping, and nailing of wall panels. With its user-friendly touch-screen interface and real-time assembly visuals, it ensures consistency and accuracy across every single panel manufactured. This system reduces human error and increases production speed.
X-MULTI multifunction bridge: A dual-station system, the X-MULTI automates multiple processes such as nailing, stapling, breather membrane application, and batten fixing. By performing all of these functions simultaneously, the X-MULTI operates at twice the speed of traditional methods, significantly improving productivity.
X-TILT butterfly tables: Designed for safety and efficiency, these hydraulic tables are used to tilt and handle panels during insulation and internal sheeting processes. They accommodate panels of varying sizes and improve worker safety, reducing the risks associated with manual handling.
Stromab CT600 saw: The high-speed Stromab CT600 Saw integrates seamlessly with CAD/CAM software, enabling precision crosscutting. This reduces material waste and enhances overall efficiency by ensuring that only the necessary cuts are made, saving both time and resources.
These cutting-edge tools are powered by HSBCAD’s integrated design platform, which enables digital fabrication workflows and rapid design-to-manufacture processes. This integration ensures a smooth transition from design to production, drastically reducing lead times and optimizing material usage.
Sustainability is a key focus of Western’s new timber panel production line. The automated system supports the company’s ongoing carbon reduction goals by enhancing the efficiency of the off-site manufacturing process. With reduced material waste, improved precision, and faster production times, Western is set to minimize its environmental footprint.
Western can also reduce site disruption, which is often a concern in traditional construction projects, as they have embraced automation. The shift to off-site manufacturing in a controlled factory environment further helps mitigate the challenges of weather delays and site-based inefficiencies, ensuring consistent delivery timelines. The new system aligns with the UK and Irish governments’ Net Zero targets, helping to meet the growing demand for greener construction solutions. This investment will allow Western to deliver buildings with higher energy efficiency, a core principle of modern construction practices.
“This investment isn’t just about keeping up with technological advancements—it’s a clear statement of where we’re heading as a company and as an industry,” said Rory McGuigan, Managing Director at Western. “We’re not just investing in machinery; we’re investing in the future of construction. Our focus is on making operations smarter, faster, and more sustainable, positioning us as leaders in the evolving market.”
Western’s larger goal of future-proofing its business includes this investment. In order to further lessen its carbon footprint, the company has been adding new manufacturing facilities for windows and furniture throughout the years. It has also started using electric forklifts.
