For a century, the name Wemhöner has been synonymous with precision, innovation, and global leadership in the specialised field of surface technology machinery. Just a year after celebrating its remarkable 100th anniversary in 2025, Wemhöner Surface Technologies GmbH & Co. KG is solidifying its future leadership structure by promoting a rising star from within its ranks.
In the middle of the year, Florian Barth (40), a seasoned engineer and company veteran, officially assumed responsibility for the technical division as the new Technical Managing Director. Starting in the coming year, Barth will join Authorized Signatory Kathleen Wemhöner to form a dynamic, youthful, and motivated dual leadership team. This marks a pivotal moment for the family-run special-purpose machinery manufacturer, setting the course for the next era of innovation in high-quality finishing systems for wood-based panels and furniture surfaces.
Florian Barth, a native of Bielefeld, brings a deep well of technical knowledge and a comprehensive understanding of the Wemhöner Group to his new role. His journey began with mechanical engineering studies in Aachen, a renowned hub for German technical education, culminating in his graduation in 2012.
That same year, Barth joined Wemhöner, beginning a robust career path that spanned the entire internal value chain:
- Design and construction: Several years were dedicated to the engineering and design department, establishing a fundamental understanding of machine mechanics.
- Project planning and management: He transitioned into project planning, successfully managing various large-scale and technologically demanding special projects, which required a deep synthesis of customer needs and technical feasibility.
- Sales and R&D integration: From 2020 onward, Barth leveraged his technical prowess to support the sales department, advising customers on technologically advanced solutions. Crucially, he later took on leadership for the Research & Development (R&D) division.
It was this broad, cross-functional experience—from the initial design of a short-cycle press line to the final technical advising of a client—combined with his outstanding personal qualifications, that led to his appointment as Technical Managing Director. In this strategic capacity, Barth will continue to champion his professional specialty: the advancement of modern surface technologies across complete industrial value chains.
The new dual management team faces a complex landscape characteristic of the global surface technology industry. While Wemhöner benefits from its long-standing market expertise and established reputation for German quality, several external factors present significant challenges:
- Economic uncertainty: Fluctuations in global markets and uncertainty among key customer segments—particularly in the furniture and flooring industries—put pressure on capital expenditure for new machinery.
- Worsening cost and competitive pressure: German special-purpose machinery manufacturers face increasing global competition, particularly from Asia, requiring a constant push for efficiency to justify premium product pricing. The high initial cost of complex special-purpose machines remains a barrier for many clients.
- Digital transformation: The need to integrate Industry 4.0 technologies, such as enhanced automation, predictive maintenance, and data-driven process optimisation, requires continuous R&D investment.
Wemhöner’s established operational philosophy—characterised by flat hierarchies, fast decision-making processes, and a deep pool of market and development experience—provides a robust foundation for navigating these challenges.
One of Florian Barth’s most critical mandates is to strengthen the company’s unique position in the global market. Wemhöner’s specialization in high-quality systems, such as advanced 3D-Variopress lines for complex moulded parts and direct lamination systems for wood-based panels, gives it a clear competitive edge based on performance and quality.
Barth’s strategy will center on:
- Enhancing process efficiency: Increasing internal and customer-side process efficiency is paramount. For Wemhöner, this means optimising manufacturing workflows in Herford to counter high cost pressure. For customers, it means delivering systems that achieve higher throughput, lower energy consumption, and superior surface quality.
- Maintaining German value creation: A key focus is to increase productivity and efficiency in the Herford headquarters to justify and maintain the core value creation activities in Germany, which is recognized globally as the source of Wemhöner’s premium quality.
- Integrating R&D into the value chain: By bridging his experience in R&D and sales, Barth will accelerate the transfer of new technologies—such as specialized digital printing systems or advanced coating solutions—directly into customer applications, ensuring Wemhöner remains the technology leader in the finishing of composite materials.
Barth can rely on the support of approximately 300 employees in Herford and the independent sister company in Changzhou, China, which, with its 200-member team, primarily serves the large and rapidly growing Asian market with tailored production capabilities. This dual-continent setup provides the agility and scale necessary to maintain a dominant position in the global surface technology sector.
The transition to a young, technically focused leadership team marks a commitment by the venerable 100-year-old company to remain an innovation driver, ensuring that German engineering excellence continues to set the standard for surface quality worldwide.
