The UK’s construction industry is taking a monumental step towards addressing its persistent skills shortage, with a focus on a craft central to modern, sustainable housebuilding: woodworking. Vistry Group, one of the nation’s largest housebuilders, has officially launched what it is calling the UK’s first-ever Timber Frame Installer Programme. This pioneering initiative, developed in collaboration with Future Talent and T3 Training & Development, is poised to create a new generation of skilled tradespeople capable of meeting the country’s ambitious housing targets through the use of sustainable, factory-built timber frames.
The launch of the programme was celebrated at a special Open Evening held at Vistry Works East Midlands, one of the company’s three manufacturing facilities. The event provided a glimpse into the future of housebuilding, showcasing the seamless integration of traditional woodworking skills with cutting-edge technology. The 15 inaugural trainees of the programme, along with their guests, were given an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of the facility, where they saw the new second shift in action. This firsthand look at the manufacturing process, from raw timber to finished panels, served as a powerful introduction to their new career path. Attendees also visited the Vistry Innovation Centre, a state-of-the-art facility that demonstrates the company’s commitment to net-zero ambitions and the Future Homes Standard. The evening was capped off with an introduction to the “Future Works” technical innovation project, which explores new technologies and materials to advance sustainable construction.
A highlight of the evening was the inspiring story shared by Vistry Site Manager Ben Forster, who spoke about his own journey from an apprentice joiner to a construction manager. His testimony served as a powerful motivator for the new trainees, underscoring the clear and rewarding career progression available within the industry. It reinforced the message that this apprenticeship is not just a temporary job, but a long-term investment in a valuable, in-demand skill set.
The programme’s structure is a key to its success. Training is delivered from a dedicated site in Barnsley, providing a focused learning environment for the trainees. The curriculum combines hands-on experience with academic learning, leading to a nationally recognised apprenticeship qualification from Barnsley College. This ensures that the trainees not only develop practical skills but also gain a comprehensive understanding of the theory and standards behind their work. Following their initial training, the trainees will be placed on Vistry sites across Yorkshire, Cheshire, and Leicestershire. Here, they will work alongside Vistry’s own team of erectors and expert subcontractors, gaining invaluable real-world experience and mentorship. This on-the-job training model is crucial for bridging the gap between classroom knowledge and on-site application, laying a robust foundation for long-term career growth.
This initiative is a direct and strategic response to a critical issue facing the UK. The construction industry has long grappled with a severe skills shortage, a problem exacerbated by an aging workforce and a decline in new entrants. With the government pushing for the delivery of more sustainable and affordable housing, the demand for skilled professionals in modern methods of construction (MMC), particularly timber frame, has skyrocketed. Vistry’s program tackles this head-on, creating a direct pipeline of skilled installers who are trained specifically to meet the company’s high standards and production needs. The company is actively collaborating with key industry bodies, including the CITB, the Home Builders Federation (HBF), and the Structural Timber Association (STA), to ensure the program meets industry-wide needs and standards. This active collaboration with policymakers and industry partners demonstrates Vistry’s ambition to become the UK’s leading employer in timber frame provision, setting a new benchmark for corporate responsibility and workforce development within the sector.
