Vida AB, Sweden’s largest privately owned sawmill group, has acquired three sawmills from Karl Hedin Sågverk to bolster its position in the European plywood and softwood market. This acquisition, valued at approximately €102 million (SEK 1.15 billion), includes sawmills located in Karbenning, Krylbo, and Säter, situated in the Bergslagen region of central Sweden. The addition of these three sawmills increases Vida AB’s annual production capacity by about 550,000 cubic meters, bringing its total capacity to 3.3 million cubic meters per year. This expansion solidifies Vida’s position as the third-largest softwood producer in Europe, reflecting a broader trend of consolidation among major European producers.
Strategic benefits
The acquisition offers several strategic advantages:
Enhanced market reach: The new sawmills provide Vida with a stronger presence in central Sweden, facilitating closer cooperation with local forest owners and improving access to high-quality timber resources.
Operational synergies: Vida anticipates realising annual synergies of approximately €9.3 million within three years through improved log procurement, streamlined operations, and aligned marketing programs.
Sustainability initiatives: The acquisition aligns with Vida’s commitment to sustainable forestry practices, ensuring a steady supply of responsibly sourced timber for its operations.

Leadership and future outlook
Following the acquisition, Karl Hedin will continue to operate under its current name, with Fredrik Marnefeldt serving as CEO. Both companies share a common corporate culture focused on entrepreneurship and development, which is expected to facilitate a smooth integration process. Vida plans to leverage its expanded production capacity to meet the growing demand for sustainable wood products in both domestic and international markets. The company aims to enhance its product offerings and strengthen its competitive position in the European softwood industry.
The acquisition of Karl Hedin’s sawmills marks a significant milestone in Vida AB’s growth trajectory, reinforcing its status as a leading player in the European softwood market. With increased production capacity, strategic synergies, and a commitment to sustainability, Vida is well-positioned to capitalize on emerging opportunities in the global timber industry.
