Versowood

Versowood, one of Finland’s largest private sawn timber producers and processors, has concluded its annual quality assessment programme for 2025, underscoring its proactive commitment to maintaining and continuously improving sustainable forestry practices. The extensive internal audit covered a significant portion of the company’s wood procurement and harvesting operations, providing vital feedback for the entire supply chain.

The comprehensive campaign involved 107 detailed quality inspections carried out at logging sites. In total, these audits covered an area of approximately 460 hectares, serving as a critical checkpoint to ensure that operational execution aligns perfectly with the company’s stringent quality standards and legally binding commitments.

This annual review is a cornerstone of Versowood’s strategy for responsible forest use, ensuring that the timber flowing into its sawmills and processing units originates from well-managed and sustainable sources. The commitment to quality extends beyond simply adhering to the letter of the law; it is deeply rooted in the rigorous application of internationally recognised forest certification systems.

While compliance with Finnish national legislation governing forestry operations forms the baseline for the inspections, the core focus of the audit is the verification of criteria mandated by two preeminent global forest certification schemes: the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) and the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC).

These certifications are essential for guaranteeing that the timber supply chain is environmentally, socially, and economically sustainable, assuring international customers that the wood products they purchase promote responsible land stewardship.

Key criteria that Versowood’s inspections focus on, in line with PEFC and FSC standards, typically include:

Environmental Protection: Verifying the preservation of key biotopes, ensuring the maintenance of buffer zones around waterways (such as small streams, lakes, and bogs), and confirming the protection of sites with high conservation value.

Biodiversity: Checking for the correct retention of retention trees (at least ten per hectare in Finnish PEFC standards) and the preservation of coarse woody debris (deadwood), both critical for maintaining forest biodiversity and serving as habitats for numerous species.

Silvicultural Quality: Assessing the technical quality of the harvesting process itself, including the absence of excessive damage to remaining trees and soil disturbance.

Social Aspects: Though primarily a Chain of Custody focus, the audits also verify that legal requirements for forest workers’ safety and rights are met at the logging site level.

A distinctive element of Versowood’s quality control program is its dual focus: it assesses not only the physical execution of the work carried out by subcontractors but also the quality of the project’s design work.

This upstream assessment of the design phase is crucial. Forest management operations, particularly logging, require meticulous planning that takes into account terrain, soil conditions, proximity to water bodies, and the location of environmental assets. By inspecting the design maps and plans, the company can ensure that potential environmental impacts are mitigated before a single tree is felled. For instance, the selection of logging routes and the placement of temporary log storage areas are checked against maps to avoid sensitive areas, especially those near water bodies or valuable habitats identified during the planning phase.

“The goal is to develop the operations of Versowood’s wood procurement and subcontractors all the way from the office to the forest, so that our commitments to responsible forest use are realised,” a company statement confirmed. This integrated approach ensures accountability from the initial planning stage to the final on-site operation, creating a robust system for continuous improvement.

The inspections, which involve both random sampling to cover general operational quality and targeted selection for environmentally sensitive areas, generate a substantial dataset. This information is considered vital for the continuous development of Versowood’s operations.

The audits, while looking into past activities, are forward-looking in their objective. By meticulously documenting and analysing any deviations or areas for improvement, Versowood can refine its procedures, enhance training for its wood procurement staff and subcontractor network, and integrate lessons learned into future planning. This cyclical process—audit, analysis, correction, and training—is fundamental to meeting the spirit of sustainable forest management as demanded by international markets and the Finnish public.

As the global demand for responsibly sourced forest products continues to grow, transparency and verification systems like PEFC and FSC become non-negotiable for large-scale timber producers. Versowood’s significant investment in its 2025 quality assessment program reinforces its position as a reliable supplier in the competitive European and global timber markets, ensuring that its business remains synonymous with high quality and robust environmental compliance. The ultimate aim is to achieve even more responsible forest management in the future, securing the health and productivity of Finnish forests for generations to come.
