Valmet will supply indispensable pulp mill technology for the new Yandian pulp mill in the Shandong province, China. The state-of-the-art facility, which is set to produce 600,000 tonnes of pulp annually, is slated for startup in the final quarter of 2026. Valmet’s extensive delivery package will include the cooking and fibreline systems, a recovery boiler, and ash crystallisation solutions, aimed at enhancing the mill’s operational efficiency, sustainability, and environmental performance. This order, which forms part of Valmet’s second-quarter 2025 received orders, underscores the long-standing collaboration between Valmet and Sun Paper. The financial details of the deal have not been disclosed.
Zehua Liu, General Manager of Sun Paper, expressed confidence in the partnership, emphasising Valmet’s crucial role in the company’s recent successful projects. “Valmet has been a trusted partner for our chemical pulp lines, with technologies that have proven to be highly reliable, efficient, and capable of maximising raw material utilisation. This marks our third cooking and fibreline delivery from Valmet, and we are certain of another successful project outcome,” Liu commented. This is the second recovery boiler system Valmet has provided to Sun Paper since 2020.
Sami Riekkola, Business Area Executive Vice President for Pulp, Energy, and Circularity at Valmet, highlighted the importance of collaboration in meeting customer demands. “Our strong local presence in China, coupled with competitive technology and service solutions, ensures we can deliver this project on time, even under a tight schedule,” Riekkola said. He emphasised the shared focus on meeting customer needs and fostering a sustainable approach to pulp production.
Xiangdong Zhu, Executive Vice President for Valmet’s China operations, also reflected on the continuing partnership, noting that Valmet’s Chinese teams would play a critical role in engineering, procurement, project management, and site services, contributing significantly to the success of the Yandian mill project.
Valmet’s scope of delivery for the Yandian pulp mill will integrate leading-edge technology aimed at optimising the production process while ensuring sustainability. At the heart of the delivery is the advanced cooking and fibreline system, which incorporates Valmet’s Continuous Cooking technology. This innovative solution is designed to achieve excellent energy efficiency and optimise raw material utilisation. The system will be equipped with Valmet’s TwinRoll wash presses, screening technology, and oxygen bleaching solutions, ensuring high product quality, low effluent flows, and exceptional environmental performance.
The fibreline will operate at a capacity of 600,000 tonnes per year, ensuring efficient processing and high-quality output. The Valmet Fiberline Analyzer and measurement tools will enhance fibreline control, allowing for precise monitoring and adjustment of the production process.
In addition to the fiberline, Valmet will supply a high-power recovery boiler and ash crystallisation systems. The recovery boiler, designed for long operational lifespans and extended cleaning intervals, will handle 3,500 tonnes of material per day. This powerful feature will enable increased renewable electricity production for the mill’s internal use. The ash crystallisation technology will help remove chloride and potassium from the mill’s chemical cycle, which significantly reduces corrosion and minimises harmful emissions.
Sustainability and productivity
Valmet’s recovery boiler solution will be equipped with the Valmet Recovery Boiler Optimizer, which plays a key role in enhancing the boiler’s performance and ensuring optimal operation. Additionally, safety systems will be integrated into the recovery boiler delivery, safeguarding the mill’s operations and providing a secure working environment.
The Yandian pulp mill project is another step forward for Sun Paper as it continues to embrace sustainable practices in its pulp production. Valmet’s advanced technology will enable the mill to meet the increasing global demand for high-quality pulp while maintaining an eco-friendly approach.
