UPM and German renewable energy development business wpd negotiated a Wind Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) in 2019. This agreement made it possible to build a new onshore wind farm in Pyhajoki, Finland, which is now wrapping up development and will begin operating in the fall of 2022. In January 2023, it will generate all the sustainable energy it can and will sustain doing so for another 25 to 30 years, offering UPM’s Finnish paper mills a long-term renewable energy alternative. UPM’s dedication to wind energy in Finland will drastically reduce emissions brought on by UPM’s paper manufacturing.

Among the largest onshore wind parks in Europe

The firm will be closer to achieving its ambitious goal of reducing its CO2 emissions by 65% by 2030 thanks to the estimated reduction in emissions from the Finnish wind park alone, which are expected to reach 200,000 tonnes annually and account for 5% of UPM’s overall CO2 emissions. With a total capacity of 188MW, the wind park will rank among the biggest onshore wind farms in Europe. As indicated by this deal as well as investments at other locations in highly efficient and sustainable power production units, UPM is dedicated to assisting the transformation of the European energy system, which will be directly impacted by this increased power generation capacity. The wind PPA ensures that UPM will buy the bulk of the electricity produced by the new wind power plant to feed into the manufacturing of paper at the Finnish paper mills, ensuring a steady supply of environmentally friendly electricity for papermaking today and in the future. The Pyhajoki plant’s completion comes at a good time because it will be useful throughout the winter, when electricity consumption at UPM’s paper mills is at its maximum, and it should lessen power supply disruptions during the ongoing energy crisis in Europe.

“The physical supply of electricity from the wind park to Finnish paper mills through the PPA forms one important part of UPM’s electricity procurement from now on. It brings cost-competitive renewable energy to our paper production,” Hyyrylainen adds.
