Numerous firms have accelerated the adoption of tech-driven improvements during the last few years. What can we expect from 2023 with the rapid workplace transformation that is visible across industries, whether it be transitioning to hybrid working or implementing new technologies? Universal Robots’ Vice President of Strategy and Innovation, Anders Beck, talks about five predictions for the upcoming year.

  1. Turnkey solutions to advance automation

Advanced robotics technology, machine learning and various other technologies have revolutionised the sector in leaps and bounds. 2023 will be the year of turnkey solutions. The key players in this will be Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), firms that build new products and applications on top of already-existing technologies. They can produce comprehensive solutions for the most popular applications by fusing various technologies. Automation will advance and become easier to use than ever.

  1. Increased use of modular production

There is an escalating trend towards employing more flexible modes of production. Cobots are outperforming the traditional industrial robots and are more compact, lightweight and easier to deploy, safer and more sustainable. The cobot industry is projected to grow to USD 2.2 billion by 2026 (The Collaborative Robot Market 2022 Report, Interact Analysis). It is anticipated that in 2023, we will see the biggest names in corporations turning to cobots to improve modularity in their production. There will be a greater than ever increase in reconfigurable robotic work cells. The weight and adaptability of the robots will be important criteria for companies seeking new automation solutions.

  1. Cobots with longer reach and higher payload set to be a gamechanger

In 2023, several cobots with greater payloads and longer ranges will be introduced, continuing the industry’s transformation in certain areas while also enhancing the working conditions of numerous personnel. Universal Robots will unveil the UR20 in 2023, a new cobot that combines greater motion control, higher payloads, and faster speeds into a lightweight, compact device. The 20 kg payload capacity will revolutionise businesses like palletizing, and we are anxious to use the 1750 mm reach for welding.

  1. Protracted growth in installation of industrial robots to continue

According to the most current IFR World Robotics Report, the installation of industrial robots hit a record high in 2021, up by 31% from the previous year. Between 2015 and 2021, the annual number of robot installations worldwide more than doubled. As we move toward industry 5.0, organisations will become more human-centric, sustainable, and resilient thanks to collaboration with robots.

  1. Customers will be at the heart of product development

Since the automation market has grown, customers are in a better position than ever to provide insightful feedback on their requirements as they are the only ones who truly understand their own needs. This implies that product development for robotics firms will include end users much more. Co-development initiatives, in which robotics businesses and clients collaborate to create unique solutions, are also likely to rise in 2023 and beyond.
