The UK’s timber industry has received a pivotal upgrade to its professional development capabilities with the comprehensive overhaul and relaunch of Wood Campus by Timber Development UK (TDUK). Designed as a brand-new online school, the platform aims to deliver flexible, easily accessible, and high-quality training tailored for the entire timber supply chain across the United Kingdom.
Developed in close collaboration with industry partner Swedish Wood, the educational hub now hosts an impressive portfolio of over 60 courses, translating into hundreds of hours of critical learning content. This extensive resource is positioned to support a wide demographic of professionals, ranging from frontline timber traders and suppliers to construction contractors and design specifiers. The initiative is a direct response to the escalating demand for verified competence in a rapidly evolving market that prioritizes sustainability and regulatory compliance.
The relaunch of Wood Campus is predicated on the industry’s increasing need for staff to be experts in product knowledge, responsible sourcing, and complex regulations.
David Hopkins, Chief Executive of TDUK, underscored the strategic importance of the platform. “Customers and specifiers today are not just looking for materials; they want assurance that the products they purchase are responsibly sourced, of the highest quality, and fully compliant with all regulations,” Mr. Hopkins stated. “To meet this high bar, every participant in the timber supply chain must be equipped to succeed.”
He added that Wood Campus provides TDUK members with the necessary tools to deepen their understanding of timber products, cultivate stronger customer relationships, and, most importantly, secure the long-term credibility of their respective businesses. This infusion of expert knowledge is central to TDUK’s guiding principle: providing ‘Timber you can Trust.’
Beyond simple course delivery, the relaunched Wood Campus is set to function as a dynamic central hub for skills development. It will offer a blend of structured, formal learning pathways and crucial opportunities for the timber supply chain to establish a vibrant community of practice—a space where invaluable, real-world knowledge and expertise can be shared openly across the sector.
Stephen King, UK Project Manager for Swedish Wood, welcomed the platform’s evolution. “Swedish Wood is delighted to witness this significant progression of Wood Campus in collaboration with TDUK. We are entirely aligned on the objectives for this educational tool and anticipate it becoming an indispensable resource for all users involved in the chain of custody and end-use of timber products,” Mr. King commented.
The platform’s learning structure is designed to accommodate various professional needs. Learners can engage with individual modules at their own pace for targeted upskilling, or they can pursue a comprehensive, industry-recognised certification.
The latter is spearheaded by the newly developed flagship programme for the timber sector, ‘The Essentials of Timber Supply.’ This course marks the debut offering within TDUK’s ambitious Timber Essentials Series, which is slated to ultimately provide comprehensive training across the entire supply chain—from the forest floor, through processing, all the way to the final customer and specifier.
The initial offering for suppliers includes both Level One and Level Two modules. These modules are strategically grouped by the final application of the product—whether it be for construction, interior finishing, or exterior use—to directly enhance sales and specification competency. Learners on this core programme will gain proficiency with dozens of timber products, covering everything from fundamental solid wood materials to modern engineered timbers, as well as MDF, decorative panels, cladding, fencing, and decking products.
With over 60 robust courses and hundreds of potential learning hours available from day one, Wood Campus is laying a robust foundation for a more skilled, knowledgeable, and ultimately stronger UK timber industry.
The initial course rollout represents just the beginning. TDUK has confirmed that additional modules will be brought online strategically over the next six months. Wood Campus complements TDUK’s diverse array of existing educational resources, which include targeted webinars and bespoke in-person training sessions, all designed to embed and drive best practices across every segment of the supply chain.
These cumulative educational initiatives are a cornerstone of TDUK’s wider, overarching commitment: to support skills development across the industry and to actively promote timber as the definitive material of choice for a sustainable construction industry. By increasing competence and confidence in timber specification and use, TDUK is directly enabling the sector to contribute meaningfully to the UK’s net-zero carbon goals, supporting the government’s ambitions outlined in the Timber in Construction Roadmap.
In a move to maximise accessibility and industry-wide competence, access to all courses on Wood Campus is currently being offered free of charge for all members of TDUK. A single, integrated login provides seamless entry to both the new Wood Campus learning environment and TDUK’s extensive knowledge library, creating a powerful, interconnected resource for industry professionals. The relaunch signals a clear investment in the future workforce, ensuring the UK timber trade remains professional, compliant, and ready to meet the demands of sustainable building.
