Timber Connection-TIMBRA Tech

In an initiative that is expected to completely change how sustainable building materials are accessible throughout the British Isles, Timber Connection has proudly announced its appointment as the exclusive distributor for TIMBRA Tech in the UK and Ireland. This strategic partnership represents a significant step forward for the company and promises to introduce a state-of-the-art, eco-friendly timber solution to a market increasingly prioritising green building practices.

The announcement positions the Liverpool-based importer and wholesaler at the forefront of the thermally modified wood revolution, a technology that is rapidly gaining traction globally for its exceptional performance characteristics and environmental credentials. With stock arriving in the coming weeks, the UK and Irish markets are poised to welcome a new, highly durable alternative for decking, cladding, and other demanding applications.

The power of TIMBRA Tech

At the heart of this exclusive new offering is the TIMBRA Tech process, a fusion of cutting-edge technology and natural elements. This innovative process takes high-quality wood and subjects it to thermal modification—a controlled treatment using only heat and steam at high temperatures (typically between 160°C and 220 °C)

The result is a new generation of wood that is thermo-modified to alter its cellular structure permanently. This internal change dramatically enhances several key properties without relying on toxic chemicals or harmful preservatives:

Superior dimensional stability: The process significantly reduces the wood’s capacity to absorb moisture (hygroscopy), leading to a material that is far less susceptible to shrinking, swelling, warping, and cupping. This is crucial for applications like exterior cladding and decking, where the material is constantly exposed to changing weather conditions.

Enhanced durability and decay resistance: By breaking down the wood’s hemicellulose (sugar compounds) that serve as a food source for fungi and insects, the thermal modification process greatly increases its resistance to biological decay. This makes the wood suitable for demanding outdoor use, often reaching Durability Class 1 or 2.

100% eco-friendly and chemical-free: The use of only heat and steam aligns perfectly with modern sustainable timber goals. The final product is non-toxic, safe for use around children and pets, and does not require special handling as hazardous waste at the end of its long service life.

Natural aesthetic upgrade: The intense heat treatment gives the wood a rich, appealing, deeper brown tone throughout the material, offering an aesthetic similar to some exotic hardwoods but sourced and treated sustainably.

In a UK timber market that imports roughly 80% of its required wood and faces mounting pressure to reduce the construction sector’s carbon footprint, the arrival of a high-performance, zero-chemical construction material like TIMBRA Tech is a timely and transformative development.

Timber Connection: 30 years of sustainability

The selection of Timber Connection as the exclusive partner is a testament to the company’s long-standing reputation for dependability, quality, and forward-thinking in the hardwood and softwood supply sector.

Established in 1991 by current CEO Danny Catherall, Timber Connection began as a modest timber broker in Ware, Hertfordshire. It quickly became the go-to intermediary, building a foundation of trust and reliability within the trade. Recognising a critical market need, the company evolved in the mid-90s, shifting from brokerage to operating as a bulk timber supplier and UK hardwood wholesaler, pioneering a new, more economical model for trade buyers to access high-quality imported hardwoods from North America.

This innovative approach allowed the business to grow consistently, leading to major investments, including the 2016 relocation to its extensive, historic premises in Kirkby, on the outskirts of Liverpool.

“Our current site, a former military storage facility repurposed for timber, is now the perfect home for over 16,000m3 of sawn and semi-finished timber products,” a company spokesperson notes. “Being linked to this historic warehouse, which we’ve brought back to its former glory, is symbolic of our commitment to heritage, quality, and continuous evolution.”

Almost three decades since its formation, Timber Connection remains a robust, privately-owned company, known not just for its extensive and unrivalled range of timber, but for its core values. The success of the business is credited to two key factors: its flexibility and willingness to make every business opportunity happen for its partners, and, most importantly, its exceptional team spirit.

“It’s the loyalty, passion, drive, and ability of our team—from the sales floor right through to the lads who load the trucks—that truly sets us apart. It’s the people who make Timber Connection so special,” the CEO affirmed.

The new partnership with TIMBRA Tech perfectly encapsulates the company’s ambitious vision to remain the market leader by setting new standards in quality, sustainability, and innovative product availability.

The arrival of TIMBRA Tech stock in the coming weeks is highly anticipated and is expected to provide architects, specifiers, and merchants across the UK and Ireland with a compelling, high-performance, and sustainable alternative to conventional and chemically-treated wood products.
