The Pallet LOOP, a sustainability-focused division of the BSW Group, has earned a coveted spot as a finalist for the 2025 edie Awards in the Circular Economy Innovation of the Year category. Now in its 18th year, the edie Awards celebrate organizations that demonstrate exceptional innovation and value creation through sustainable solutions that reduce waste and promote resource efficiency.
This recognition highlights The Pallet LOOP’s efforts to tackle unnecessary pallet waste in the UK construction sector. By recovering and repairing robust, reusable pallets designed with sustainability in mind, the company is driving a circular approach to pallet use. Since May 2024, The Pallet LOOP has launched its reusable timber pallets with support from British Gypsum, a major pallet user in the sector. Isover has also adopted the system this month, shipping insulation products on the company’s distinctive green-coloured pallets.
The Pallet LOOP operates a nationwide collection service to recover these pallets after delivery. Recipients, including builders’ merchants, contractors, and housebuilders, can arrange for pallet pick-up and receive a PayBack of up to £4 per green pallet returned.
Nathan Wride, Head of Partnerships & Innovation at The Pallet LOOP, emphasized the importance of shifting towards a circular economy:
“Waste is no longer just an inconvenience; it’s a clear sign of inefficiency and environmental harm. In today’s world, where resources are finite and sustainability is critical, we must see waste for what it truly is – a problem we can no longer afford to ignore. The future is circular – defined by systems where materials are reused, recycled, and kept in circulation, reducing waste and preserving resources for future generations.”
He added, “The construction industry has been crying out for a different approach to pallets for years. We are delighted with the results we’ve achieved in the six months since our green pallets went live. Together with British Gypsum, we’ve put so much effort into getting this new way of working off the ground. As we redefine norms when it comes to pallets, edie’s acknowledgement of our endeavours is a great way to end a momentous year. We look forward to the awards ceremony in March.”
Significant Sustainability Impact
Since its launch, The Pallet LOOP estimates it has:
Saved the construction sector approximately 250 tonnes of carbon
Diverted up to 2,500 tonnes of wood waste from skips
Preserved around 5,000 m³ of timber
Saved companies nearly £1 million in skip costs.
Through its PayBack mechanism, The Pallet LOOP has distributed over £150,000 to companies returning pallets, enabling them to reinvest in social or environmental initiatives or boost their bottom line.
Encouraging a Shift in Behaviour
The Pallet LOOP is redefining pallet use in the construction industry by:
Offering bright green timber pallets, stamped with the LOOP logo and equipped with radio frequency tags for tracking and reporting.
Providing a nationwide collection service, retrieving pallets within 72 hours from building sites and merchants.
Incentivizing pallet returns with PayBack rewards of up to £4 per green pallet.
Pallets are critical to global building material distribution but have historically posed environmental challenges due to disposal practices. The Pallet LOOP’s innovative system offers a sustainable alternative, reducing waste and supporting resource efficiency.
The winners of the 2025 edie Awards will be announced at a gala dinner in London in March 2025, where leaders across industries will gather to celebrate advancements in sustainable business practices.
