Östermalmshallen Padel is going to be Sweden’s largest reuse project in the construction industry. Real estate firm Wallenstam relocated a wooden structure that had been a temporary market hall in Stockholm’s stermalm and transformed it into a padel hall 500 kilometres to the southwest. The suitability of Kerto LVL elements for demounting and reuse in construction is well demonstrated by this project.

A sustainability project and a learning journey

The 2,000-square-metre hall has won awards for its design. This reuse project has captured the attention of RISE Research Institutes of Sweden, which is involved in Swedish research promoting sustainability and explores suitable ways of designing buildings that can be reused in other locations. In order to find a solution that would allow Östermalmshallen’s business operations to continue uninterrupted, the vast Östermalmshallen market hall in Stockholm needed renovations in 2016. The answer was to construct a temporary structure that could be utilised again and thus, the temporary market hall was made completely of wood utilising products like Kerto LVL from Metsä Wood. The project was finished in just over a year, including its disassembly, storage, and reassembly in Mölnlycke, where it has since been dedicated. Prefabricated wooden elements are the foundation of the idea. In order to create a stronger structure and use less material, the roof is constructed from Kerto LVL beams that are arranged in a grid-like pattern. Because the construction sector is currently responsible for a significant portion of the climate impacts, Johan Wuollet predicts that in the long run, it will become a necessity for the industry that structures be able to be disassembled or flexible modified for new purposes.

“This has been a sustainability project for Wallenstam and a learning journey to gain more experience on how to reuse a large building. Like every other industry, the construction industry must focus on sustainability and circularity. Wood material is in line with this goal, and whether we use wood alone or in combination with other materials, I believe reuse will play an increasingly important role in future construction projects,” says Johan.
