Sveza Group-waste management

Strength, durability, and aesthetic appeal make birch plywood valuable in the global market, but environmental concerns are developing. One of the biggest manufacturers of birch plywood in the world, Sveza Group, has finished an extensive upgrade of its waste management infrastructure across important Russian mills, marking an enormous leap towards sustainability and the principles of the circular economy.

The comprehensive program, rolled out at facilities in the St. Petersburg, Kostroma, and Perm Regions, moves beyond traditional waste handling towards an integrated, source-separation model. This upgrade is foundational to Sveza’s ongoing strategy to maximise the utilisation of timber resources and drastically reduce the environmental impact of its large-scale operations.

The centerpiece of the upgrade is the implementation of a refined separate waste collection system organised directly at the point of waste generation within the mills. This process involves equipping work areas with clearly labeled containers designated for specific material streams, allowing for the immediate segregation of secondary materials—such as film, cardboard, plastic, and various wood residuals—before they are mixed or contaminated.

This initial, meticulous sorting is critical to improving recycling efficiency. By ensuring the purity of each material stream, Sveza significantly increases the viability of these secondary materials for their processing partners, thereby closing the loop on more of its operational waste.

As Yulia Barial, Environmental Manager at Sveza, emphasised, the initiative is about building a clear, consistent operational culture. “Separate collection and well-organised storage sites are not cosmetic changes; they are essential to environmental safety and to maintaining a responsible production culture. The more recyclable materials we can return to use, the greater the benefit for the environment and for local communities.”

The infrastructural improvements were tailored to the specific needs and materials handled at each location, reflecting a practical, site-specific approach to environmental stewardship:

A fundamental component of Sveza’s waste management philosophy is the principle of maximising the use of wood resources—a critical metric in the forest products industry. The plywood production cycle inherently generates wood residuals, such as veneer trimmings, cores, and sawdust. Sveza’s program ensures these materials are not merely discarded, but are re-integrated into the value chain.

The mills have already established successful programs that convert production residuals into valuable bioproducts, including fuel briquettes and firewood, which are then supplied to local markets. This approach not only supports the company’s goal of achieving a zero-waste philosophy but also generates local economic benefits and provides a source of carbon-neutral biomass fuel.

The birch plywood sector faces constant global pressure regarding sustainable sourcing and responsible manufacturing. Initiatives like Sveza’s upgraded waste management system contribute to the industry’s broader goal of demonstrating sustainability credentials, which are increasingly vital for maintaining access to international markets.

By focusing on process integration and investing in specialised infrastructure—from segregated collection bins to environmentally secure storage—Sveza addresses the entire life cycle of materials within its mills. This systematic approach contributes to:

  1. Reduced landfill volume: By recovering and recycling a greater percentage of non-wood materials (plastics, films, metals) and maximizing the re-use of wood residuals, the volume of non-recoverable waste sent to landfills is minimized.
  2. Higher recycling rates: Source-separation drastically improves the quality and value of secondary material streams, making them more attractive and easier for external recycling partners to process.
  3. Operational Efficiency: The development of internal processes to turn residuals into products like fuel briquettes not only reduces waste disposal costs but also diversifies the product portfolio and increases the overall efficiency of the raw timber resource.

The completion of this major infrastructure upgrade across its core operations underscores Sveza Group’s position as a leader prioritizing sustainable development and operational excellence within the global birch plywood sector, setting a new benchmark for industrial resource management in the forest products industry.
