Sustainable Forestry Initiative president Kathy Abusow to retire in 2026 after significant leadership legacy

The Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) has announced that President and CEO Kathy Abusow will retire in 2026, after leading the organisation through a period of substantial growth and increased global recognition. Under her leadership, SFI expanded its reach across North America, making notable progress in advancing sustainable forestry practices and strengthening its relevance in both the forestry sector and environmental sustainability.

A Legacy of Growth and Impact

Throughout her tenure, Abusow has been instrumental in driving practical sustainability solutions that have yielded measurable results. One of her key achievements was increasing the SFI certified land area to more than 370 million acres (150 million hectares) in both Canada and the U.S. These acres are certified under the SFI Forest Management Standard, including public, private, Indigenous, and community forests. The expansion has extended to millions more acres positively influenced by the SFI Fiber Sourcing Standard.

Abusow’s leadership was marked by strategic growth and a commitment to impact. Dan Lambe, CEO of the Arbor Day Foundation and Chair of the SFI Board, expressed appreciation for her contributions: “Kathy’s leadership has invaluably shaped who SFI is today. She has been a strategic growth leader who translated mission into impact and results. We are deeply grateful for her many contributions and the strong foundation she leaves behind.”

Expansion Beyond Standards

Under Abusow’s direction, SFI expanded its focus beyond forestry standards to incorporate a wider range of environmental initiatives. This included significant work in conservation collaboration, community engagement, and building stronger Indigenous relations. She also prioritised environmental education and career pathways in the forest sector, ensuring the workforce was prepared for future challenges.

In 2017, SFI integrated Project Learning Tree (PLT), a renowned environmental education program, into its portfolio. This move significantly enhanced PLT’s reach, and in 2018, Abusow founded PLT Canada, which has placed over 8,700 Green Jobs since its inception. These jobs have engaged young people, with 50% of the participants being women and 15% Indigenous youth. Additionally, hundreds of young adults have been reached through Green Mentor and Youth Delegate programs.

A Champion for Diversity and Sustainability

Abusow has been a vocal advocate for diversity in the forestry sector. She is known for her efforts to make the sector more representative of society at large. Her work has also highlighted the need for sustainable practices in the industry, encouraging companies to embrace environmentally responsible practices. As a leading voice for sustainability, she has driven meaningful change in the forestry sector and beyond.

Leadership Transition Plans

A comprehensive search for SFI’s next CEO will take place over the coming months. The Board of Directors will carefully evaluate candidates to identify a leader who can build on the current strengths of the organisation, drive its mission forward, and guide the implementation of SFI’s 2025-2030 Strategic Direction.

To ensure continuity during this transition, SFI’s leadership structure will undergo adjustments. Abusow’s roles as both President & CEO of SFI and President & CEO of PLT Canada will be divided into three leadership positions. Jason Metnick has been named President of SFI, while Christine Leduc, RPF, has been appointed as President of PLT Canada.

Ongoing Support During Transition

Although Abusow will retire in 2026, she will continue to provide guidance and support throughout the transition. She will work closely with the SFI Board and senior leadership to ensure continuity and stability during this critical period.

“I am thrilled that some of the members of my Senior Leadership Team will be immediately elevated during this transition,” said Abusow. “Their experience and commitment will ensure that SFI continues to build on the foundation we have set for a sustainable future.”

The Future of SFI and Its Mission

Abusow’s legacy will be one of significant growth and impact in the field of sustainable forestry. Under her leadership, SFI has grown its influence across North America, and its programs have helped improve sustainability standards for the forest industry. As SFI moves forward with its 2025-2030 strategic direction, it is well-positioned to continue its efforts in creating a more sustainable, inclusive, and resilient forestry sector.
