Stora Enso recently inaugurated its new cross-laminated timber (CLT) production facility in Zdirec, Czech Republic. Following a EUR 79 million investment, the new CLT facility is one of the most contemporary in the world, supporting Stora Enso’s aim of growth within wooden construction solutions. This will equip the brand to produce more CLT thanks to the new location, helping to address the growing need for affordable, environmentally friendly, and renewable building materials.

Anticipated yearly production capacity approximately 120,000 m3

Location adjacent to Stora Enso’s European markets gives the Zdirec facility an added advantage. With a total capacity of 490,000 m3, Stora Enso is consolidating its position as one of the top suppliers of wood-based construction solutions in the world with the opening of the new production site. From the investment decision in September 2020 through the beginning of production in the third quarter of 2022, when the first panel was produced, the project went as planned. After ramp-up, the anticipated yearly production capacity will be close to 120,000 m3. CLT is establishing itself as the cutting-edge engineered wood product of the future all around the world. For floors, walls, and roofs in residential, commercial, and industrial structures, it has been successfully incorporated in solutions.

“This new state-of-the art production site is well in line with our strategic integrated site concept and will enable us to offer a high-quality range of building solutions for future generations. Completing this Stora Enso milestone is an outstanding achievement that was made possible by our Zdirec team, which professionally executed the entire project on time and on budget,” says Lars Volkel, EVP and Head of the Wood Products division at Stora Enso.

According to Martin Brebis, mill manager at Zdirec, this is a historic event for the company. Additional advantages will result from the integration with the current sawmill, such as in the areas of raw materials, energy, and logistics. According to him, the website would also offer more than 100 new job possibilities.
