Stora Enso completed its EUR 30 million investment to renew energy use and processes at the Heinola Fluting Mill in the final quarter of 2025. This investment replaced solid fossil fuels with renewable bioenergy, resulting in a reduction of more than 113,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide annually—an over 90% decrease compared to previous levels.

The investment is a significant step toward Stora Enso’s goal of halving greenhouse gas emissions from its operations by 2030. The emissions reduction at the Heinola Fluting Mill corresponds to the carbon footprint of housing for approximately 80,000 average Finns.

“The project was a very rewarding and diverse experience. Commissioning proceeded with the expected intensity, but thanks to close cooperation everything went according to plan. Success was based on strong collaboration with various partners as well as the committed support of our own personnel. The new equipment and processes have now been commissioned following test runs carried out with the suppliers, and we are satisfied with their performance. In addition, we achieved our targets for both occupational safety and environmental emissions”, summarises Eija Liikola, Project Manager, Heinola Mill.

“With this investment, the carbon footprint of our Heinola mill is now among the lowest on the market. At the same time, we have improved process stability and efficiency and strengthened the mill’s competitiveness”, says Mikael Sillfors, Technology and Investment Manager, Heinola Mill.

The project was completed as scheduled during the mill’s annual autumn shutdown. It involved the construction of a new fuel receiving station and conveyor system, along with a major modernization of the fluidized-bed boiler. Civil engineering works were handled by RTA Oy, equipment installations by Raumaster Oy, and boiler modifications by Sumitomo SHI FW Energia Oy.

Stora Enso works with people and in communities all over the world through their operations, sales and supply chains. In each and every step Stora Enso takes, they consider their actions and their impact on others.

Their purpose “Do good for people and the planet. Replace non-renewable materials with renewable products” underpins their belief that everything that can be made with fossil-based materials today can be made from a tree tomorrow, and highlights Stora Enso’s opportunity to contribute to a greener economy.

Stora Enso’s purpose and values are underlined by our continuing commitment to promote a more sustainable future, one less dependent on fossil fuels and supporting a bioeconomy where the production and consumption of products are based on wood as a renewable resource. Wood fibre-based products store carbon and can also replace non-renewable materials such as plastic, glass, steel, concrete and fossil fuels. With global warming, growing populations, urbanisation, changing life styles and eco-awareness, trees can be a big part of the solution for customers and their consumers towards a sustainable bioeconomy.

Their commitment to renewability is not only about the company’s raw material. It is also linked to resource traceability and responsibility, production and material efficiency, logistics and supply chain. From the forest or plantation to the end product, they work responsibly and with respect to local rules and regulations. The company continues their push for carbon neutrality as well as their focus on human rights and on-the-ground investments in communities where operate.

“Everything we do aims to meet customer needs and be the best choice for renewable solutions.” – Stora Enso.
