Stora Enso and Csech Pavilion collaborates to showcase engineered wood’s prospective

 Monday, April 14, 2025

The World Expo presents a global forum for bringing together individuals and innovations from around the globe to address global issues affecting humanity. This year, Stora Enso is honoured to be a partner of the Czech National Pavilion and participate in attracting tens of millions of tourists to Osaka, Japan. In order to excite the world with its creative use of materials, the pavilion’s revolutionary PEFC-certified wood construction, which has a glass façade, uses more than 800 m³ of Sylva™ CLT pieces.

“Our partnership with the Czech National Pavilion gives us a unique opportunity to present one of the tallest cross-laminated timber (CLT) buildings in Japan on the largest stage of global innovation, here at the World Expo in Osaka. Stora Enso already has a long history of supplying high-quality posts and beams and sawn wood to Japan. Thanks to CLT´s leading sustainable performance, its well-being benefits for the tenants, and last but not least, its improving financial competitiveness we see an increasing demand for wooden commercial and multi-story residential buildings in the region. I am sure the pavilion will serve as a stunning example of the unique structures that can be built using Sylva™  by Stora Enso kit of prefabricated wood-based products for low-carbon buildings,” exclaims Lars Völkel, Executive Vice President, Stora Enso Wood Products division.
The world’s oldest surviving wooden structure, the Horyu-ji Temple from 607 AD, is a prime example of Japan’s centuries-old heritage of wooden architecture, which is still evolving today. “The Japanese government actively promotes timber use in construction, including non-residential buildings, to cut carbon emissions and support a circular economy. This aligns with Stora Enso’s mission to do good for people and the planet by replacing non-renewable materials with renewable products,” highlights Satoshi Yamada, Sales Director Japan, Wood Products, Stora Enso.

Stora Enso & CZECHIA

Greeting guests through October
With its prominent location on the water, the visually appealing Czech National Pavilion provides guests with an unforgettable visit. It is one of the Expo’s most stunning buildings due to its prominent location near the water.
Magnificent views of Osaka Bay may be seen from the 260-meter educational trail that winds across the park. At its core is a multipurpose auditorium that will serve as a center for education and cross-cultural interaction throughout the exhibition by hosting an extensive and captivating program.
The pavilion’s dynamic 402 m² exhibition space is located inside. Its widths range from 1.8 to 7 meters, and its height may reach up to 12 meters. The Sylva™ CLT pieces by Stora Enso, which are built in Czechia using wood from locally managed, sustainable forests, bring to life the design’s emphasis on sustainable construction and architectural innovation.
The main structure was finished by the middle of December 2024, after construction started in the middle of September. Following this, the pavilion’s distinctive glazed spiral was installed, providing a sleek and contemporary final touch.

The dates of the 2025 World Expo in Osaka are April 13–October 13. For those who are enthusiastic about design, engineered wood, and environmental conservation, the Czech National Pavilion is a must-see.
