Sodra intends to include lignin in its selection of forest-based materials and is looking for collaborators to create sustainable lignin substitutes for fossil resources in a variety of applications. As one of the top pulp suppliers today, Sodra has clients in many different parts of the world and a vast global logistical network. Both paper pulp for papermaking and dissolving pulp for the textile sector are produced by the pulp mills.

Significant potential in lignin for the green transition

Sodra recycles textile fibres extensively in the novel OnceMore process, enabling circular flows in the textile sector. A responsible use of the raw material is promoted through the mills’ sale of biomethanol, tall oil, and turpentine under the Liquid Forest brand. The newest illustration of the goal to ensure that no component of a tree is ever wasted is the intention to make lignin widely and consistently available on the market.

Millions of tonnes of lignin are taken out of wood every year by Sodra, one of the biggest makers of pulp from forest raw materials in the world. However, because of its ability to link, lignin has a lot of potential as a sustainable material. Today, lignin functions primarily as a binder in the chemical industry. However, lignin has a far larger range of applications because of its good phenolic structure as a base for chemicals and raw materials that are now made from fossil sources. The second-generation lignin is already accessible; it is a solid version of kraft lignin that has a variety of novel applications.

“A sustainable society needs to find new ways of using natural resources,” said Vice President Sodra Cell Bioproducts Johannes Bogren. “Around a quarter of a tree consists of lignin which means our pulp mills produce it in large quantities. We always strive to make the best possible use of our forest raw material and lignin has the potential to replace fossil materials and contribute to the green transition.”
